I'll throw in my story, Life has been pure **** for me lately. I hate opening up, but I need to get it off my chest. 4 months ago my lif was going great, I was doing pretty well in college, working, had a pretty good life. Then it all went to hell, my dad had a stroke while I was at college, He slowly declined to the point where I had to put him in the nursing home. (Something I swore I would never do, but had to).

The stroke took his short term memory completely away, there was one point he didn't know who his own son was. He's lost his vision, and can barely see in front of him. Then the man I had never seen cry in my entire life, cried like a baby because he was confused, and didn't know where he was. And because I couldn't stay with him every moment at the nursing home. I watched the strong man that had raised me fall apart in front of my eyes. It killed me on the inside, but I show no emotion, I'm numb to it all now. After my half brother died in a car wreck, (just got back from Iraq too) I became numb to everything.

I have to wonder how this all could happen to me, It's like someone is shooting at you and hitting everyone you love but me. I'm so stressed now, constantly getting outrageous nursing home bills and hospital bills, Life is a bitch and you just have to keep going, although I must admit it's damn hard being positive, my dad is getting better, but it's gonna take time for a full recovery, hopefully this summer he'll be close to where he was. But I feel you man, the OP, Life is a rollercoaster man.

Believe me, life can get worse. I wake up every day knowing my wife is living with another man. My daughters know their mom has left and they no longer have her at home. I have a huge mortgage to pay on my own. I am responsible for two girls of vastly different ages and needs. My oldest daughter told me last week she doesn't care whether she lives or dies. My youngest gets excited if she "gets" to see her mom. I have to keep my house spotless for realtors to show to potential buyers. I have to cook most meals at home due to money issues, so there goes the spotless house unless I stay up late after I get my little girl a bath, do homework, get her in bed, and counsel my oldest. I have to keep the thermostat on 58 degrees because I can't afford a big electric bill. We have concrete floors, so it's freezing cold in the house and none of us like to be there. Mom is no longer home and it just feels weird and lonely. We all miss her. The woman I love and wanted to spend the rest of my life with is now my enemy and I had to take her to court for custody of my children. Seeing my wife at the courthouse and wishing I could do something, anything, to make her change her mind and come home, now that's a problem.

I would do ANYTHING to have a few financial problems and irritations yet still have my wife. I used to get bent out of shape over seemingly big problems, too. Now I know what a true problem is.

I also know it could be worse. I have primary custody of my kids. I am receiving child support. All of our mutual friends and coworkers support me and think she's crazy. Some great people picked me up and convinced me to fight back.

Can life get worse for me? Absolutely. But I'm going to believe it's gonna get better.

Sorry to hear that longshadow. Seems like a lot of us are going through a rough stretch. I took my car into the shop today and had them take a quick look at it. What was frightening was that when the guy touched the front bumper, it just completely fell off. Had that happened while I was driving, I might not be here! So I guess that's one positive thing I should look at. He took a preliminary look on the outside and pretty much confirmed what I had seen. Front bumper = dead. Headlights, side fenders and hood = fine. The right headlight is a bit loose due to a broken tab, but he said they could epoxy that tab back and not need to replace it. The gap between the hood and the left fender isn't uniform, so that will need correction. With the bumper off, I didn't see any twisted metal in there, so that's a good thing, but I have a sleepless night tonight.

They're going to give the front end a full inspection tomorrow morning and give me an estimate. They heard my story of how it happened and were VERY nice, however. They said they'd give me a loaner, free of charge, so that I have something to drive while they inspect it, then repair it. The initial estimate is that it will probably be $1,200 if there is nothing else wrong with it, and up to $3,000 if there is something wrong with the engine compartment. (With how tight Honda's engine compartments are, there could be something wrong in there). I can't go through insurance because I have two no-faults on my record in the past 2 years (I just seem to have horriffic luck) and my policy allows for only two no-faults before they claim that they have a right to raise my rates. While it will hurt bad to have a $3,000 charge to pay off now, it will be better than a greater long term cost hike. I can at least put $3,000 on a credit card and pay off what I can each month. Ugggh. I just hope it's on the low end of things because I could still dig into my "emergency funds" and just pray to the good lord above that nothing else happens to me over the next year while I re-build that emergency supply.

The one good thing that's happening is that I am so stressed over this that I haven't eaten any food over the past couple of days so perhaps I'll lose some weight.

You'd be able to save a ton of money if you bought the bumper yourself, had someone paint it, and installed it yourself.

Not really that difficult to do.

So throw in labor, and that's a minimum of $1,200. I'm just going to cry a lot right now.

That was my thought, but at the same time I need someone to check and make sure that it is just the bumper that needs replacement and not something else. With the bumper falling off the car, I couldn't drive it anway so I'm kind of screwed.

Edit: The car is less than a year old so I need to be sure that any repairs don't invalidate the long warranty that is on it.

That's not too bad...you can save up and pay off that cash. Sucks, but not the end of the world.

The tough thing to remember sometimes is that money isn't everything. I know it's cliche, but if going bankrupt is the worst possibility then that's really not that bad. Money can be replaced or earned, health of you, family, and friends can be tougher to replace...

Thanks Odogg. I could probably use that. (And I'm not saying that in any way to downplay the events told in there). I just hate this feeling of nervousness and anxiety I have right now, and will have until the shop calls me tomorrow.
