I pay $800 a year with full coverage. But then i'm 40 too and maybe if he's younger he's paying a lot more. Or maybe he should think about switching providers, heh. I think though he said he'd had some accidents already or something.

Yes. I pay $350 a MONTH for auto insurance. I have tried going through numerous different companies, but they all give me the same rate. In the past five years, I got one speeding ticket (5mph over the limit) and have been involved in two auto accidents that resulted in my car being wrecked. They were both no-fault accidents.

First one happened when I was driving in to work two years ago. There was a great deal of traffic, so I went and took a side route into work. At the time, the sun was coming up so it was shining right in through my windshield which had gotten kind of mucky thanks to the grime being kicked up by the cars in front of me. As I'm driving in, quite slowly mind you at barely above 10mph, something ran in front of me. At the time, I didn't know if it was an animal or maybe a kid. So I hit my breaks and swerved to the right to avoid it. As I swerved, my right front tire lost traction and I ended up going right into a metal light pole. It was a 2003 Honda Civic and that is when I learned that Civics become a wreck if you touch the front end. As I sat there, a bit stunned and quite sore, I saw that it was just a large dog that went in front of me. The police came and wrote the report and stated that it was not my fault and was due to conditions beyond my control. They did not cite me for anything.

The 2nd accident happened last April. After my first car (which was fully paid off and I held the title to it) was deemed "totalled", my insurance rates didn't move. My policy states that two no-faults are allowed before rates will increase. I was out at dinner and noticed on my continuous blood glucose monitor (I'm a Type I diabetic, but insurance companies can't jack your rates up just for that) that my blood sugar was rising fast. So I gave my bolus of insulin to cover the food and continued on. The meter buzzed again and my blood sugar was even higher! It was as though there was nothing getting into my system. I was eating a high-carb meal, so I assumed that was the cause. I gave a correction bolus and continued on. Still, it wasn't lowering. Not wanting to put a massive bolus in right before driving home, I just let my blood sugar rise and finished up.

I was driving home and really don't remember too much more. I just remember seeing a bunch of cops and EMT's around me on the side of the road and then going to the ER. I wasn't cited for anything, but my car went off the side of the road and wound up hitting a random junked car that was there. The front end was crumpled in, and once more the insurance company declared it totalled. I was pissed. Two weeks later, I got an urgent letter sent to me via FedEx. It was from the company that makes my insulin pump. They said the were issuing an urgent recall on the infusion system that I was using. The problem they were recalling it for was that there was a flaw in the design that can cause a pressure difference where the infusion system meets the insertion device. It can cause insulin to not be delivered when bolused, then suddenly releiving the pressure and pumping in a large amount. So now I KNOW that what happened is that my system was malfunctioning and when I kept giving more boluses to cover my dinner, it just was backing up in the system and not getting into me. While driving home, it just released and pumped a MASSIVE amount of insulin into my body causing my blood sugar to drop and me to lose conciousness. I have been in touch with dozens of lawyers, but none of them are willing to take on the case against a large pharmaceutical company when the only "damages" were to my car.

Still, the insurance company decided that due to the "total damages paid out on my account" that they were going to raise my rates. What used to be $106 a month was now $350 a month. Nothing I can do about it. I'm 29 years old, so being young they can just jack my rates up to no end. I now need to go a good five years without any traffic tickets or any more accidents (Whether or not it is my fault means nothing after these two no-faults). I mean, even my insurance agent said that in both of these accidents, it was just a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time and that in no way do they deem me even remotely at fault.

This is why I hate insurance companies. They pretty much have the right to screw you every which way, and because you are required by law to have insurance, you have to deal with it.

Stop buying new cars, man. $350 a month is ridiculous. 29 isn't 'young' when it comes to insurance, once I hit 25 my insurance went really really low. I have never been in an accident (knock on wood) or had a ticket, though.

I dunno... sounds like you just have bad luck. Get a used car next time.

It can't even be due to new cars. I drive a 2008 Lexus GS350 that was purchased new and my wife drives a 2009 Infinity G37 that we purchased new (total cost is near 100K). Between both cars, we pay a little under $1400 per year for insurance. Her driving record is clean. I have 1 accident and about 5 tickets in my past - none within the last 5 years though. $350 is way too much for a 29 yo IMO...even with new car(s).

Agreed. Im 28 and Insured a new Nissan Titan and my wife drives a new Sentra and its like 1200 for the year. Neither have anything. I think my wife got a ticket once when she was 18 but thats it. Ive never had a ticket or accident or anything.

When I was 18 and in the Army I bought a 94 camero used, i had like 80K miles on it, I payed something like 220 A month. I remember my sergeants and anyone I told what I payed for insurance nearly had a seizure.

A few months prior to that, after a graduated basic training, I had visions of grandeur about buying a new vehicle. I had money down, I got the right monthly payment on this new jeep, but I had to get insurance to complete the deal and they wanted something like 300 a month or something whacked out and it ruined me getting the car at all. I then went to my assignment and just got the camero.

Whats classic is that I bought that car for like 6,000 my monthly payment was 209 per month. I pyed more for insurance than i did for the whole car lol.

Hey, there are always blessings and silver linings. I had a spinout coming home from work last night in a snowstorm. Hit an icy patch and did two or three 360's on the street. I was so lucky that no one else was driving on the street and there were no pedestrians, or it would have been an awful accident. I just ended up hitting a snow bank and there was no damage to my car. Scary, but it could have been a LOT worse. I feel so blessed; it really could have been terrible. It sounds corny and cliche, but it really made me think about my life and how quickly things can happen.

Honestly I know you are probably just down and all..but can you seriously say that? You could easily be homeless, dead in 3 weeks from a terrible disease, starving and so on. But that is still terrible for you. I was feeling down when I lost my laptop charger(15) and my mp3 player broke which will be a 150 buck repair just for the screen in just two days. So yea, I guess that is just what is happening...
