 Re: Manual or Automatic.

Only had manuals. Even in the crappy traffic in the tri-state area I want no part of an automatic. I love driving a manual."You make your name in the regular season, and your fame in the postseason." - Clyde Frazier

 Re: Manual or Automatic.

My fiance has owned her manual 98 Jetta (diesel engine) for a mighty loooong time. In that time she's done most of the minor mechanical work herself and taken care of the care in a decent fashion. It's still running amazing to this day and when she had transmission problems she only had to replace the clutch for a couple hundred. Every time she's taken it to a shop for work people are always trying to buy it off her because A) diesel engines have less problems, B) they get better gas mileage and C) the manual engine can run for a long time. It's not out of the question for her car style to go 400,000 miles before they finally die.

Conversely, I've owned two automatic cars in the past who've both had transmissions blow out on me. Each time the repairs ranged from $1000 - $2000 due to having to either completely replace or repair the transmission. Right now I own a used 97 Honda Accord and it's been a dream to drive. Yes, it's automatic but I know at some point she's going to die on me. When that day comes I've already decided I'm going to get something manual + diesel engine.

I don't know how to drive manual and in all honesty, I really don't want to have to drive one mainly because I like to relax and not stress out about one more step while driving. But in the end, I want a vehicle that will last longer and give me less grief in my pocket book and that far outweighs me simply wanting to be 'lazy' and drive an automatic. If I can buy one car and drive it for 10+ years then hell, why not? Saves me a car payment, lower insurance, and repair costs.Comment

 Re: Manual or Automatic.

My car has that Auto/Manual mode thing (like the Triptronic mentioned earlier) but to be honest its a bit of a waste of time and nothing like driving a real manual. There is no clutch so you are just bumping the auto stick up or down depending on which gear you want to go to and other than perhaps giving some slight increase in accleration if you stay in a lower gear for longer than the auto would before upshifting there's no real benefit imo.

From my experience it's one of those things that sounds cool and you think you will use it then when you get it you find you never use it and just drive it as a normal auto 99.9% of the time.

If i was to ever get a "true" sportscar it would have to be a manual. Though it would be embarrising if i stalled it at the lights. Comment

 Re: Manual or Automatic.

They still make manuals? I thought those went away with the beta-max and cassette.

I figured it'd be like asking someone if they preferred to change channels by using a remote control or if the enjoyed getting off the couch and walking to the to change the channel.

Just kidding. I understand the joy of a stick. I drove one until my senior year in college. It was fun. But now I drive a F-150 and a Tahoe and a manual wasn't even a thought with either of those vehicles, especially with an hour and a half of Houston traffic every day. However, every once in a while I get to drive my in-laws Prelude and it can be a blast.

Maybe some day when I get older, have a mid life crisis and go buy a sports car, I may go back, but right now I appreciate the ease and mindlessness of an automatic. Drive, park and Reverse. No clutch, no down shifting, no worries.Comment

 Re: Manual or Automatic.

Absolutely agreed. I was thinking of getting an STi, but after thinking about driving it in I-5 traffic every night, I decided to just get an automatic WRX.Comment
