Smoking, Dipping, Drinking, Burning: Why or Why Not?

I'm a high school senior, and I've obviously been tempted by all of these. Smoking and dipping, both related to tobacco products, have always interested me and tempted me since I work at a gas station. It's hard not to resist thinking about doing it or buying one just because I'm already there. I have tried all of these but have decided to quit a while back. But now, I am starting to get tempted again.

I'm just looking to see what you guys have to say about all of these - mainly smoking (cigars, not cigarettes, if that makes any difference to some of you guys) and dipping (tins, snus). I am tempted when my friends offer me something or simply give me something for free. For example, my friend owed me from a favor a while back and paid me back by giving me an opened Backwoods Honey Berry packet with three cigars left in them. Now I've never tried one, and I haven't done anything (other than drink) that is bad for me for a long time but I'm tempted to just try it to get the flavor and what not.

Some of my friends tell me that it's not bad if you just do it once in a while. They claim that those who get mouth or lung cancer dip cans or smoke cigarettes every second of the day. I have a feeling that that is what I'm not supposed to believe, but like I said... just tempting is all. So yeah, what do you think about it all?

As for drinking, I have kind of tried to stick to just that. I like drinking good ol' beer, but I don't drink often. So I have no problem with drinking, but like I said, I just wanted to see what you guys thought about these hings so I just threw it in there to talk about.

I've never done any of it, nor do I see the temptation or the point of doing any of it.

Never had a drink til I was 21. Parents never had it in the house and I was never curious about it.

Drink at certain events-- ringing in the new year, weddings, etc. It's nowhere near as exciting once you get "legal" and having to pay for it.

No to the rest. Not interested, plus I'd rather spend my money elsewhere.

I've tried smoking, dipping, and drinking of course and IMO they are all overrated. I've smoked a few cigars in my life and some cigarettes and just didn't see the appeal to them. Most of my friends I've made in the Navy have been from the South and a lot of them dip. I've tired it a few times and thought it was disgusting. I can see where you think it would be tempting, I thought it was too. But the temptation soon ended when I tried it. I choose not to waste my money on it and also for obvious health reasons.

As for alcohol I've never really liked the taste of it. I don't drink it daily or even weekly. Every now and then I'll have a few beers and of course I'll have a drink at holiday or special events but I've never really liked alcohol, tobacco, etc.

Smoking is straight up ********, whether it's cigs or a blunt.

Drinking is indeed hard to not do. I only drink with people I know, and not that often.

Dipping is the hardest, believe it or not. Dipping supposedly calms you down (I wouldn't know) which makes it popular pre-game. It makes the whole locker room smell like Wintergreen, which is enough to stop me from doing it.

I have dipped for 14 years..............and its beyond addicting. I never did any of it, until I got to college and played baseball. Over half the team did it, and I tried it, and here we are 14 years later.

I actually quit for 2 years, and then went to Wrigley and saw a double header.............drunk as hell in between games, I bummed one off a guy in the bleachers, and it was on. I then quit again for 3 months, and then started back up again.

My teeth and gums are in good shape, and I am nut about brushing, flossing, mouthwash.......but that does not make it ok. I go through a can a day($3.50 ) and you do the math. I need to quit for good, while I am still ok. I have an appointment with my doctor in 2 weeks so he can prescribe Chantix.

I love dipping, love the taste, love the feeling, love doing it while I got the sticks in my hand, after dinner.......thats the biggest problem.

And NO......it is not ok. Its a true addiction, and I have been blessed not to have any issues so far. I proactively sought my doctor out for the prescription. It truly does control your life.

Unfortunately I'm with ya BlueNGold. I've been dipping since I was 16, I'm in my late 20's now. Copenhagen Snuff.

I think dipping is a nasty habit and personally do not see the appeal in starting. Especially when you know its likely to become a habit and then an addiction. I'd like to see MLB do away with it. If we deemed it's inappropriate for a ball player to smoke in the dugout or on the field, why the double standard?

I agree that it's ******* disgusting and nobody should try it. But I'm not in favor of telling major leaguers that they can't do it. You just can't compare that to smoking a cig. The end result is the same C word, but the act of it isn't even close. You have to use your hands to smoke a cig. I never played a game without a dip, and I can't hit the golf course w/out one either.

If people don't wanna do it then they shouldn't do it. But major leaguers aren't blowing smoke in your face with their snuff at a restaurant while you're trying to eat.

Yeah, but I've actually tried all of these things and have decided to lay off on it, but really I really want to try again right now but I know it's not good for me... but... but... lol

                          This.

Once I turned 21 I effectively quit drinking. My body is sensitive to alcohol. I don't like it and would rather not get fat from it, either. What's kind of weird about me quitting is it wasn't planned or spurred from an event. I just got sick of the feeling and eventually just quit drinking. Unfortunately it's a very strong tradition where I grew up (Central MN) so nearly every person I know drinks and parties.

The only thing I'd suggest is monitor yourself. Don't take things to the point where you legitimately regret it. Keep in mind if you drink regularly it gives your body a great opportunity to get fatter real quick and easy. I've seen so many grow up through college and actually look far WORSE when they leave. Come in looking 18 and leave looking 35 with a big gut... in 4 years.

I've never smoked or chewed anything. It just doesn't appeal to me... simple as that.

Re: Smoking, Dipping, Drinking, Burning: Why or Why Not?

Nothing wrong with drinking as long as you can control yourself. The point in highschool and early on in college for me was to get drunk. Blacking-out was something that happened often, especially in my first and second year of college. I'm 25 now and the only times I get "drunk" are when I see old friends or somebody offers me a shot (I'm done paying for those). I may get drunk once or twice every six months or so. All I am into now is buying a good six pack of beer every week or so and sipping on that at the house. I'll occasionally go out to grab a burger and a couple beers with friends, but even then I only drink it to wash it all down and because I like the taste of beer.

Smoking is another story though. I've smoked for nearly 4 years off and on. Smoking and drinking really go hand in hand in Texas. While I do enjoy the occasional cigarette, I honestly would just like to quit it all together. It's an expensive habit that is just not worth it. I smoke cigars on special occasions, usually with my dad and family. Today is Easter, so I'm going to the parents house to have dinner, whiskey on the rocks, and most likely a cigar with my dad. Nothing is really bad for you unless you make a habit out of it. Cocaine is one helluva drug, but it can be addicting like no other. Self-control is the key. If you want to have a good time (or whatever), do it. Just control yourself and your urges...which can be hard to do. If you find that your a habit forming person, don't smoke, don't dip, and don't do anything that you can become addicted to.
