Re: Smoking, Dipping, Drinking, Burning: Why or Why Not?

My dad chewed for 20-25 years, and about 15 of those years he spent trying to quit. So I never wanted to start since it's so addicting, plus that it's distgusting as hell. As far as smoking, I watched my grandmother live her last 10 years of her life dying from smoking for 50 years. It was painful to see. So, I never touched that stuff either.

Drinking added to the college experience but I made a lot of stupid mistakes from it . I've realized that in the past year or two and rarely have more than a beer or two when I go out anymore. I got sick and tired of waking up with a terrible hangover and losing an entire day doing absolutely nothing.

Smoking and dipping are the most disgusting, dirty things you can do.

Drinking...well, I only do it on certain occasions, which usually take place over the winter.

Re: Smoking, Dipping, Drinking, Burning: Why or Why Not?

The only thing I've ever really been tempted to do was smoke(cigarettes) and drink. I've never dipped or smoked cigars. I first drank when I was 13, took a couple sips of my friends mom's alcohol. First time I was drunk was at a party in high school(i think i was 17). I don't drink much. Only at friends every now and then.

As for cigarettes, I've been smoking them for about a year now. I'm addicted. My parents smoke and growing up watching them and being around them, every now and then I would be tempted to pick one up and try it. I did just that when I was 15 and hated it. Didn't try another until 4 years later. I was 19, went to a friends house, I tried one and ended up smoking the entire thing. I got a HUGE buzz from it. That's what got me started. I'm now 20 and have been smoking about 8-10 every day for a little over a year. I'm completely ashamed of smoking now. I always knew how bad cigarettes were for you. I always told my parents to quit. I never thought in a million years I'd be a 'smoker'. Anyone who looks down on me for smoking, go ahead. I look down on myself. I hate it. I don't like smoking in front of people as it's rude and I simply don't want them to know that I have such a horrible habit. Hell, my parents don't even know that I smoke. I want and need to quit, but I'm just not ready. I tried a couple months ago, but didn't even give any effort(ended up buying another pack not even 2 hours after I said I was going to quit).

Re: Smoking, Dipping, Drinking, Burning: Why or Why Not?

As far as drinking goes, If you can manage to just be a social Drinker thats awesome. Going totally abstinent with alcohol can be a detriment to your job, friends, or meeting new people. I would recommend developing a taste for beer, I only drink 4-5 beers when I am with friends(unless I am out to get drunk).

As far as Tobacco goes, DONT. I used to smoke, Quit cold Turkey when i joined the Army. That actually helped because in Basic you are so busy you dont even think about it. Then about 6-7 weeks, The Drill Sergeants lose their fear factor, Everything turns into a Routine, and then the Tobacco craving comes back. Since smoking was a sure way to get caught, I tried some Copenhagen Longcut and then it was On. Throughout my Army stint I tried all sorts of Dip but I have settled with Grizzly(good taste and the price is right, $2 a can on the Indian Reservation).

Basically I have got into a routine with dipping as others have pointed out that really sucks because I have to have a Dip in when i am doing these things:

            Driving
            Playing Xbox
            Taking a crap
            Golfing
            When i first wake up
            After Meal Dip

I only go through about 3/4 to a full can a day, so I only spend about 60 a month which is not horrible.

Once again, I agree with pretty much all of that. Especially the smoking part. I smoked cigarettes for 13 years and it is my biggest regret. I haven't had one in over 4 years now and just the smell of them makes me sick. Dipping is just straight up nasty and makes me think of backwoods hillbillies when I see people do it.

I do drink alcohol quite frequently but I'm far from an alcoholic. I stick to only craft/microbrewed beers and don't touch any of the American macro garbage beers (i.e. Budweiser, Miller, Coors, etc.) at all.

I've never been tempted to begin smoking or dipping for I find both habits offer no benefits. I do not believe I would enjoy smelling like smoke nor would I enjoy chewing on tobacco. My logic says if I'm fine without it, I find it gross, and it's addicting, then why would I ever touch it? I often wonder how so many people get sucked in to these habits.

I do not drink either. I know billions of people can drink in moderation and call it good. . .and that's cool with me. Just personally, again, I see no reason to begin.

Re: Smoking, Dipping, Drinking, Burning: Why or Why Not?

I started smoking when I was 16, and I quit when I turned 18. Almost every friend I have, both outside and at work, smoke. I just don't see the point.. it's not for me.

Dipping, I've tried once or twice, but I really can't stand the taste. I know it's probably an acquired taste, but I really just can't dig it.

Drinking, I used to drink like a fish when I was in high school. A few nights a week (at least), we met at my buddy's house and partied down.. drink till about 3-4ish, sleep till about 7-7:30 then get up and go to school. I missed about 30 days or so, my senior year, but none were related to drinking. It's been to the point where I would be hung over in class, and have to be excused just so I could go throw up.. it's only happened once, but still... pretty sad.

Today, I'm 20 years old and I'll be 21 in October. I don't really drink much anymore, because I work a lot and I can't really afford more then one habit all the time. The only habit I have is "burning" if we're talking about the same thing ? Why do I do it ? There's no exact reason. I still go to work (I've never called in once since I started my new job 9 months ago), I still pay my bills, I still have a life and I'm very active (love to play sports, and I'm still pretty family oriented.. and I do it every single day.. it's just me.

When It boils down to it, I think people do what they want to do, regardless of what someone else thinks is good for them. We're all given a body and we're all given choices as to what we want to do with ourselves. I make my choices and I don't tell anyone else what choices to make.. it's their life and they can make what they want of it.. or they can **** it up.. it's their choice. There's a way to do things without being risky or getting yourself in trouble.. people just let their habits effect their ability to make decisions, which leads to stupid **** happening (ex: getting nailed for a D.U.I, possession, etc).

Completely disagree. Most of the people I meet respect the fact that I don't drink, especially my friends.
I just tell them it's not apart of my lifestyle and if they can't deal with that, then too bad. It isn't detrimental to anything.

How did you quit? Cold turkey? What things did you do to keep your mind off of it? That's the biggest problem for me. I want to quit. But every time I try, I can't keep my mind off of it. And I always make up excuses like "Ah I've only been smoking for a year.. I still have years of smoking left before I have serious health issues, and by then I'll be done." Or "Ok.. 1 more pack and I'm done!" I can't stop making up excuses for myself.

I may be pointing out the obvious to you here (If so, I apologize), but a lot of jobs and work places provide their employees with special discounts to Chantix and other stop-smoking programs. Where I work, it's free for all employees and their spouse.

If you're employed, it may be worth the look or you could try doing what someone else in here did, and consult your' doctor.

I must say, that's a sweet discount/benefit. I'll have to ask my boss on Monday about it.

I just need to find some ways to keep my mind off smoking. Even at work, even when I'm busy, I think about it and eventually give in and smoke one. It's annoying. lol.

I could be wrong but I'm thinking the point he was trying to make was that not drinking could potentially leave you out of situations and gatherings centered around alcohol (such as a bar).

I'm pretty sure he didn't mean that others would look down on you for not drinking.

Never smoked a cigarette. Never dipped. Haven't lit up in about 3 years and even then it was probably only the 5th or 6th time ever.

I do drink though. Usually about once a week on a bar crawl with friends. Never had the urge to drink alone.
