Something I Have Been Experiencing On The Subway

A few weeks ago I was sitting on the train and this older (40-50) year old woman asked me to sit down because her knee was bothering her. So I got up and let her sit down. No biggie.

2 days later, the SAME woman gets on the train and asks me to sit down. She is dizzy this time. Since I remembered her face and knew she had pre-existing injuries with her knee:
Me: My knee is bothering me
Her: Well I hope I don't fall on it
Me: Yea I know that won't happen.

An older woman behind me gave up her seat for this woman. I guess I might have been viewed as a jerk.

Yesterday, I saw her get someone else. Another young male gets the treatment. I wonder what her excuse was this time. But he gave the seat up.

What are your thoughts on this? I personally think she is just abusing the "rule" that we are supposed to give our seats up for them. I am sure it shocked her when I didn't get up. If I thought she was serious I wouldn't have an issue but I am pretty sure she finds a way to do this every single day.
    Concrete evidence/videos please

Hmmm...seems odd. I think she just doesnt like standing up. 40-50 isnt bad. If she was older I would let her sit but 40-50 she can just suck it up lol.

I dunno man, tough call. I can bet that I think the answers you get from this from the southerners may be different then the northerners. I'm not going to judge you for not giving up your seat, I probably would have but again there is no written law that says you have to give up your seat for anybody.

Lady could honestly have some embarrassing problem or may fatigue easily standing so just says anything to try to get a seat. I don't have much experience with trains/subways outside of my short stints in Europe while in the Navy, but I usually just tried to stand whenever I got on public transit. Again though if I had to use this day in and day out I might have a different outlook.

Agree about the northerns vs southerns mindset, I would have given up the seat, again, and I'm from the south.

BUT I will say this, on my few trips up to Boston with my lady to visit her family I can honestly say I would HATE riding mass transit systems all day: too packed in, not enough air, too many people, invasion of personal space, etc, so I'd assume after a period of experiencing this everyday I would be less sympathetic to the plights of others.

well I mean, you gave up the seat once, then you found out she was a liar. Then you refused to give up your seat to a liar. whats the issue? You did the right thing. "Being a gentleman" goes hand in hand with "being a lady". This woman obviously isnt a lady.

                  Winner!

Next time she asks, you should call her out on it.

It's a woman. Stand up and give her your seat. She's making things up because there are too many people doing what you're doing. The end.

I think that's bull****. Man or women should have no barring on my decision. I would give up my seat if they were elderly NOT because of their gender.

Also - don't most subways have few trains that are allocated towards the elderly and handicapped?

I know that's how it is in Toronto, not sure about the US.

I look at it this way.... My mother is in her 50's and has that fibromyalgia crap. She is always tired and has something bothering her. Hearing about this woman makes me think of my mother. Maybe she is in pain for reasons we dont know or maybe she is trying to work the system.

To me its like the handicap parking issue. You have people getting out of the car that dont look disabled at all but really they have something we know nothing about. Other times its just somebody who is driving someone else's car and takes advantage of the handicap plates.

What I was gonna say. Man or Lady, if they are older and could use the seat, I'm getting up.

Me personally I probably would've called her out on this like "So which knee is hurting today?" just to let her know that I see the slick stuff she's pulling on folks.

I lived in Boston, Atlanta, and NYC (Brooklyn) and NYC is clearly the most crowded. I visited DC for business and the metro during rush hour is a beast also but few things compare to the tightness and smell of NYC subways.

I wouldn't have given her my seat. I am few months from 40th birthday and unlesss someone is pregnant, disabled, or the elderly they can stand.
