That's pretty much my point of view. I take the subway every day for work and never sit. I'm young and healthy and I can endure a 20 minute train ride standing up. Its not a big deal. I'm disgusted by the people who are in my position that do take a seat and then continue looking at their paper and do everything possible to not make eye contact with the older person standing in front of them or the pregnant woman clutching the railing. Have some class.

That's a shame right there. I can't believe people do that. I'll always give up my seat for an older person, pregnant, anyone in need.

Now giving up your seat to any woman of any age is going a little far IMO. I'll give up my seat to an older lady, pregnant or a lady with an obvious need to sit down but I do not see a reason to give a seat to a young girl who is just as healthy as me who can stand up.

Maybe it's because I'm in the military and view man/woman as equal and if you look healthy and ok then you can stand man or woman. I don't view woman as weak beings who can't endure standing for 20 minutes.

I am a gentleman and will offer anyone in need a seat but I do have a line.

But, oh my god, like, that pregnant woman might've gotten pregnant because she's a prostitute, so nope, she's not getting my seat.

            This.

Just how I was raised, I will always offer a woman my seat and always hold a door open. Makes you wonder now why they are so many "Why can't I get a woman" threads on here.

I always hold a door open myself but I think if you see a young girl on the subway maybe she wants to stand. And if you offer her a seat she might take it that you view her as weak. I think it would be weird to offer a girl around my age if she wants a seat. The girls I know would deny it and take it the wrong way. I think especially now woman want to be viewed as equal.

Like I said if anyone asks me for a seat I will give it up, but I simply won't offer my seat to anyone other then an older person, pregnant, or someone with a disability.

I'd like to see Jim commenting here. I think Jim's the "older" guy among us (even though he's not a woman), so I'd like to get his perspective (hopefully I didn't miss his comment).

                Jim, are you there?

And just to make it clear: I ALWAYS give up my seat for elderly people/pregnant women. But I don't believe in giving it up to any woman. By the way, 21 y/o lady is a woman. Now, unless you're trying to get her phone, what's the justification for giving her your seat? She's young, she can stand like anyone else.

                  Why do we need justification?

Why can't we just do it for no reason? As others have said, it's how I was raised, I'll give my seat to be polite, not to get something in return.

It doesn't matter much to me that others here won't do it, but is it really hard to believe the some people will be courteous just to be courteous?

There's a difference between being courteous and being a simp.

I used to be that guy. Being extra polite and going out of my way to be courteous.

Then, life happened and I grew up.

I'm okay then with being an immature 27 year old because I will be courteous.

I'm not here telling anyone else how they have to act towards others, everyone is their own person.

But do you honestly believe that someone who continues to be courteous through their adult life isn't grown up?

That is one of the more ridiculous things I've heard. I'm not here to argue though so I will just leave it at me admitting to be an immature considerate individual.

No justification = doesn't matter what the situation is. That's the way I see it.

What you quoted was my explanation to use as to why you couldn't compare those two situations...It wasn't me telling you how I felt.

You asked someone if they would give up their place in line in a similar situation. I said you can't compare the two for the reasons I listed above. It wasn't me telling you what I would or wouldn't do in that situation...
