Yep this was a bit of poor planning. Maybe they couldn't afford to put different personnel in different planes?

Well the thing is that people normally wouldn't anticipate plane crashes from the get-go, and in fact it sounds more likely that one of multiple planes has a "better chance" of crashing than just one plane. That being said, there would be just as much blame if one plane crashed and the others didn't, with people saying, "If only they were on the other plane." It's a no-win situation, but unfortunately this killed everyone. And like I said, no one ever anticipated this; we wouldn't have said a thing if it landed, and we all would have went on with our lives.

But unfortunately this didn't happen. This is a very sad day for Poland. R.I.P.

Wow. Devastating news. Wonder what the line of succession is? They will need to act quickly as this would be an opportune time for a terrorist organization to strike.

I'm sure there will be plenty of foreign aid to prevent this.

I got this from another site...if this would've happened to the U.S., it'd be comparable to losing:

-Barack and Michelle Obama
-George Bush (the elder)
-Four cabinet members, among them Sec. of Defense Gates
-The White House Chief of Staff
-Four of the five members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff
-A boatload of Senators
-The Chairman of the Federal Reserve
-The Presidents of the American Bar Association and the U.S. Olympic Committee
-A well known, elder actor, such as Alan Alda or Gene Hackman

That's devastating.

Poland doesn't have a VP, they do have a Prime Minister though.

Well I think definitely having more planes and having one of them crash is the lesser evil then putting everyone on a plane and then that one crashes. Both are terrible situations but if only 1 plane crashes at least you don't have a situation like this.

Yes your chances do go up of a plane crashing with more planes in the air but your chances of losing everyone drastically goes down.

That is what we do here in the US and I'm glad we do it that way.

I don't think there's too much worry about plane crashes here. The main reason for having multiple planes is so that one cannot be shot down or hijacked, ect. It's the same reason it's never revealed which car the President is in the motorcade.

I would have to think that this sort of tragedy would be much less likely here with our superior aviation system, so I wouldn't worry about this happening here too much. The chance of a plane crash on an airline is extremely slim and with all the maintenance and such that Air Force One receives and the fact that I'm sure the pilots flying it are some of the best in the world, I doubt we'll ever have such an issue here (unless terrorism is involved).

This is certainly bad news for Poland, though. It's nothing compared to the millions of people that perished under the Soviet and Nazi regimes, but this is awful news. R.I.P.

I think when it comes down to it, them trying to force the pilot to land at that airport rather than diverting it to a different airport caused the crash. I know the news media keeps throwing out the phrase "aging Russian airliner" but the Tu-154 isn't a bad aircraft.

I agree. The plane chased in dense fog. They should of listened to the air traffic controllers and diverted to another airport. The plane came in too low and hit trees and the pilot probably didn't see them at all or until it was too late because of the fog.

I read on another site that a plane was approaching the same airport shortly before the crash and that one did divert after the ATC instructed them too.

I know the Tu-154 has been involved in crashes before but I think it will come down to pilot error as well. And this paticular aircraft wasn't flown much at all and was just checked in December and had new engines and everything put in, so it wasn't a poorly maintenanced old plane like you will find in Iran or some countries in Africa.

I think most of the Tu-154 crashes have happened with African Airlines, I can think of the one that collided with the DHL 757 that I saw on Air Crash Investigation and the one that involved an aircraft getting accidently shot down over the Ukraine.

To be fair those planes are dangerous. I know one Russian company tooked those planes away from use because they were worried about the safety of the passengers, and those planes have crashed to land many times due a mechanical problem. And when Poland's president visited Mongolia couple of years ago his plane broked there and president's other plane which is the same model was broken aswell, so the president needed to take a tourist flight to Tokio where he met Japan's Emperor Akihito and the Prime Minister of Japan, he was eight hours late. And two days later when the plane was fixed it had problems landing to South-Korea due the turbulence. And even the Prime Minister of Poland said that they really should buy new planes for President, but they didn't buy any new planes. Here is a quote that the Prime Minister said couple of years ago:

We don't need to buy those luxuroius Airbus planes. We only need to buy planes that will secure President's basic safety.

And now they can see why they needed those. I know that there is rumours about the president commanding the pilots to land, but I don't know about that. And again Poland's Prime Minister said this about the pilots who were flying that plane:

I knew the pilots and I know that they were really good pilots.

R.I.P. All who were died in that terrible accident.
And my deepest condolences to Poland. Hopefully this doesn't happen ever again to any country.

The Tu-154 wasn't the safest plane and you can look at the long list of accidents at airdisasters.com or any other website but I think even if they had an Airbus the same result would of happened. You can build the world's safest airplane but if you attempt to land in those conditions you can see what the result is.

Look at the Air France crash last summer. An A330 I believe. State of the art airplane and it crashed due to weather, at least that is the belief.

If you're going to call the Tu-154 dangerous then I could say the same about the MD-80 and its variants.

The DC9 was by far the most dangerous plane ever built.
