Thanks for the info as I didn't know about that part about arrests in Pakistan and such. It's clearly a terrorist plot then. Thankfully it was amateur hour on his part but it's scary what kind of damage could've been done if he had done it better.

Man we dodged a bullet again. First in December with the failed attempt and now this.
I'm actually surprised this hasn't happened more often, creating car bombs or just IED's in general.Ohio State - Reds - Bengals - Blackhawks - BullsComment

My only guess is major terrorist organizations like Al-Qaeda only want to do "big" attacks like 9/11 or the failed Northwest Airlines bombing. But I agree with you I'm surprised we haven't seen more attempted attacks like this from amateurs.Ohio State - Reds - Bengals - Blackhawks - BullsComment

any person, who has the attitude to attack, injure, and kill American citizens for nothing more than hate, is a terrorist. Re: Major bomb scare in NYC
I can say that the way he set up this car Bomb, It would not have created the Explosion he was hoping for. Judging by the information Released, the VBIED would not have caused mass casualties for one simple reason, it would not have been an immediate explosion. 10 Gallons of Gas will not create a Bomb in and of itself. The Propane Tanks would not have exploded immediately or at all, new ones have safety features that prevent the Flame from going into the Tank and creating an explosion.
Basically this is how it would have played: The Fireworks Go off and Ignite the Gas Tanks creating a mini explosion inside the car. People May or May not get injured by this but no one will die. Since there are a massive amount of Cops in Time Sq. they would have secured the scene getting everyone away by the time any real explosion happens.
Personally speaking, I could have made a much better bomb and ignited it at the Airport via a Cell phone.
It's called a BLEVE...boiling liquid expanding vapor explosion. As the gas gets released little by little by the relief valve(which if you watch in the video ....you can see the flames jet out every once every several seconds for a bit....that's the relief valve letting the gas escape...problem is...those are not designed to actually be of much help during actual fire engulfing those tanks....why you might ask?....because at a certain level...when the LPG level reaches a LOW level in the tank...is when the tank itself becomes most dangerous...the low level of liquid propane can no longer stand the pressure or the heat and begins to boil...the next time there is an opening...either through rupture at a weak point or...you guessed it....that relief valve opens. That is when you get your explosion(the bleve).
That video...times three with ten gallons of volatile fuel waiting to be dispersed in the explosion is pretty friggin' big.
We got lucky plain and simple.
You may be able to make a better bomb...but not for the 150 bucks he spent(minus the vehicle....he could have used a clunker from the junkyard for 100 bucks).
As for the propensity of it....
As I said...about a month ago, we had a similar car fire in South Jamaica Queens.......as the Engine Co stretched two lengths of hose from the pumper(100 feet of hose) to the vehicle which was in a kind of junk field....we thought something was odd.....an older car being torched?...that's when the flames blowtorched like you see in that video. The tank was in the trunk...and when it blew...it blew the hatchback open and the trunk lid about 25 feet in the air. The hydraulic pistons that hold the hatchback closed....blew off and one hit the Engine chauffeur who was at the pump panel(100 feet away!)...in the face cutting him up pretty bad(luckily not hitting him directly in the eye or breaking any bones). We all got sprayed with glass and the rear bumper blew off and luckily missed us.
Like I said.......X3 with gasoline and possibly some ANFO is not going to be pretty in Midtown Manhattan.

What scares me is that this guy was on a no-fly list and he still managed to get on a plane. This is twice now. Something has to change quick.

As far as this guy getting on the Plane, I say no Harm no Foul. Whats the Difference between arresting him on the Plane and doing it at the Terminal, besides the fact that we delayed the plane taking off, but eh. We got the Guy with very limited leads on American Soil, Sounds like a Win to me.
BTW, Why is the Media not talking about the fact that the SUV was parked infront of Viacom's HQ? Seems kind of coincidental this happens only a few weeks after the South Park Incident...Last edited by Cusefan; 05-04-2010, 09:53 PM.My dog's butt smells like cookiesComment

Re: Major bomb scare in NYC
the difference is 10 minutes late in determining he's a terrorist while he's in the terminal..not so bad. 10 minutes late in determining he's a terrorist while he's on the plane, equals plane taking off and the risk of lives lost due to an attack on the aircraft.I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.
