Re: When I was growing up...

That OP is 100% spot on.

Not only did we have to stay outside all day in the humid Alabama heat, when we got water we had to share it from one big *** cup that we got from Exxon. Or even worse, guzzle the warm stuff down straight from a water hose. There was always that one person you absolutely didn't want to drink after too, but you kept your mouth shut for the most part. You complain, you stay thirsty.

You ain't lyin' there. My dad used to whoop me to the point that it looked like he was possessed..he was looking up in the ceiling or something. It was like a short electric chair! My mom would tell me to go outside and get a hickory switch...that's just plain cruelty to ask a victim to choose what weapon he will be hurt with. I still don't get the line "This is going to hurt me more than it hurts you"...bunch of hogwash!
What? And don't try to be smart and go out there and pick a little switch, because then momma is gonna go find one for you. If that happened, you had a nice long 6ft monster that had three tips braided at the end and sealed with a pink rubber band. It was nothin' nice. You could talk about Child Protective Services if you wanted to, but that would just get you laughed at.

I lived in the country. We had to go in the bushes and woods to hand pick our lunches and snacks.

No internet, just a huge set of World Book Encyclopedias from the 60's or the library. I ask my kids if they want to go to the library they look at me like I'm crazy. Going to the library when I was a kid was a treat! We used to do it voluntarily just get out of the heat and get some cold water!

Or you had to wait around all day to tape it off the radio, and the DJ would usually talk over the beginning and @#*% it all up! There were no CD players! We had tape decks in our car. We'd play our favorite tape and "eject" it when finished, and then the tape would come undone rendering it useless. Cause, hey, that's how we rolled, Baby! Dig?
If we were looking for a particular song we'd have to call the radio station and request it, then wait for long periods of time for the dj to finally play it.
      PS: You guys are great.

I remember just recording segments looking for gems. Remember the effort it take to make a mix tape for a girl. With CDs today that takes what, 5 minutes at most?

I can still remember my last whipping, but don't even remember what I did to deserve it. All I know is I manned up, didn't cry a single tear or say a word. I got more than usual to try and get a response out of me. That was a proud day. The 'rents had to go to something else.

LOL, yeah. I don't even remember the last time I saw a rotary phone though I think my paternal grandparents still had one as late as the mid/late 90's. It's funny though, sometimes when you are in one of those automated calls where you have to push buttons to select what service you want, after they give you the options they sometimes still say "If you are not sure who to speak with or are on a rotary phone please stay on the line and someone will be with you shortly".

I'm not old but, I'll be there soon enough. I'm 19 going on 20 and If you haven't been whooped with a switch then you don't know what a whoopin' really is.

I went threw some of the things people in the 80's went threw but, it's not near as bad lol. I've played the Atari as a child, had to wait every Saturday to get my new cartoons, and there DEFINITELY wasn't no child protective services when I was getting my *** whooped' with a switch many many times.

I agree though we do have it easy, very easy considering what you guys didn't have in the past.

I also remember space invaders and a little Atari game having to do with a submarine and and a few more that I can't remember playing.

Re: When I was growing up...

You know,at the time I thought it was rough. But looking back on it,and knowing the things I know,I'm very thankful for the way my parents did things when I was growing up.

I mean,I look at some of these kids now,and their parents they just don't give a damn. Some of these kids are just running wild. They don't have any respect for adults. The over 30 crowd will back me on this one,the one thing that would get you in trouble faster than anything was backtalking an adult,no matter who it was.

We were taught to respect adults. I remember when all a teacher had to do to get some rowdy student to stop acting up was "I called your dad today at lunch" Now some teacher does that, the parent is more than likely gonna hurt the teachers feelings.

Re: When I was growing up...

                          Great thread...

Since it's a Sports Gaming site, I'd like to wiegh in with the fact that Strat O Matic dice based games were the PS3 level equivelent of the 70's...

The fact that they could make stats come out in line with real life was considered pretty amazing...much better than the other option:

MAKING UP YOUR OWN DICE GAMES USING TRADING CARDS!

Yes kids, we had to use our imagination and will those cards and dice games to fill our heads with scenarios and drama that rivaled any of the thrills I've had with state of the art videogaming...

Heck, Table Hockey and Electric Football were the "Next-est of Next Gen" and guess what?

Nobody complained about sock colors, ball physics or player ratings, etc...

Oh, I alomost forgot about the best option:

GOING OUTSIDE WITH A BALL AND PLAYING WITH THE KIDS IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD...

Exercise and Imagination are sadly, in short supply these days, IMHO...

The youngins today may have more access to information to make their lives easier when doing research and all. They may have cooler gadgets than we did. But our cartoons kick the crap out of the ones they have today.

                              Great original post.

I completely agree and my fiance feel the same... we're both 28. It seems that the tremendous boom in technology in the late 80's/early 90's created a massive generation gap the likes no other generation has seen.

This isn't just with computers, but with everything. The microwave, processed foods, power grids, mass entertainment, etc it all seemed to make everything attainable with minimal effort. It seems now that people have to work much less for things the simple things has caused more issues: addictions (physical, psychological, medical, etc), obesity, impatience, etc. The younger generations seem almost helpless at times, and it's a damn shame because they don't know what it is to not have things. They have no hunger, they have no desire.

I actually still take pride in trying to live things in the "old" way not because I hate technology - I'm a big fan of it - but merely so that I keep my life sane. I don't need to be connected to the entire world all the time via facebook, internet on my cell, gps's, ipods in my ear constantly, etc. Sometimes I just like being able to be away from it all so that I appreciate what I have more and I like to take in the world around me. If I don't take time for myself then I lose myself.
