Re: Discuss.
You DON'T let someone walk away from you when you're in law enforcement. That's completely and utterly disrespectful. He was put there to enforce this, not be a presence and watch people do it.And that is EXACTLY what happened. You asked how the cop could have gone about this situation better and avoided the physical altercation. I told you how to avoid it: DON'T go after her. That is the only way to avoid the physical altercation, because the minute you go after her, you HAVE to initiate physical force.
The problem is, it's JAYWALKING. If you have to physically chase someone down, and initiate physical force (putting his hands on her), over something like jaywalking, something in your head should go off telling you "hey bud, this probably isn't a great idea. Why am I physically subduing someone over something as petty as "crossing the street improperly?""
That's completely devoid of any logic whatsoever. So I should let someone break the law, and let them go because "eh, it may cause a confrontation... I better just let them go." That's ridiculous.
He's enforcing it because the school asked him to enforce it. They didn't ask him to enforce it on people who were willing to obey the law, they did it for people like this, who were obviously breaking the law. It's a law for a reason. I've seen many people hit by vehicles and end up either in Intensive Care or in the grave because of stupid stuff like this. It's just jaywalking is a horrible mindset.
He shouldn't have let her walk, and he did the right thing, no matter how you want to look at it. Jaywalking or manslaughter, you break the law, and disrespect a law enforcement official, you pay the respective penalty.Twitter - WTF_OS

Re: Discuss.
He edited his post.He shouldn't have chased down the girl, put his hands on her, and dragged her back to her car over JAYWALKING. I do not like it when people put their hands on me, I do not like when people try to show their dominance over me and treat me like I am a bloody animal. I don't want a cop putting his hands on my arm, and dragging me to his car unless I'm under arrest (for an actual crime). I am betting this is exactly what the girl was thinking. Some white boy cop putting his grimy hands all over her, and for what? Because she walked across the street improperly?
This whole thing could have been avoided had he just let the girl walk away. It's jaywalking for christ sake.Bears | Bulls | Cubs | Illinois | #Team3Some

Re: Discuss.
Well....also not exactly right.
Even areas with the most lax regs in this regard will allow just about any form of law enforcement to ask someone for I.D.
Without a reason....no P.O. is going to bother...pretty much ever.
That aside....what I think the guy you quoted meant was....if he asks...produce. Simple as that.
Like WTF said....If I asked you to stop and comply...you were. I preferred if you just listened....but heck...once in a while it was fun if one of the big guys wanted to rumble a little. Keeps you fresh. I didn't like it when they tried to bite though. Try to bite...you were falling down the subway stairs.
Sgt: WTF happened to him?
Us: (in unison) He fell.
Have a good day.

Re: Discuss.
Then fine, go after her. I'm just giving you alternatives as to how this could have gone down.
Another alternative: Stop her by placing your hands on her shoulder, if she shrugs them off, apologize and tell her that she was jaywalking. Either give her a warning, or tell her you're issuing her a citation.
If she walks away again, and the conflict escalates to what happened in the video, then the punch his justified. However, the sounds as though the cop bypassed the politeness and went straight for the physical altercation. He grabbed her, she resisted. Instead of calming the situation, he just kept on grabbing, and that is where things went sour.Comment

Re: Discuss.
I'm not gonna waste my time quoting everyone who disagreed with me, but I will say this:
Jay walking is a petty crime, and regardless of the school asking to crack down on it, I'm pretty sure the officer didn't sign up to the force to stop a rash of jay walking crimes. The human element in him could have ignored it, or simply let the girls off with a warning prior to a citation being issued. You don't know what was said or done that made this situation escalate. All you see is a scuffle when the tape begins.
For all those asking what would you have done if you were the cop, what would YOU have done if a cop is wrestling with a relative of yours and you feel they are going overboard? I'm not saying the cop went overboard (other than the punch) in this case, but lets say your sister or mom got punched by a police officer, would you stand there and "let him do his job?"
For the record, I am NOT defending the girls...they did a very stupid thing. However, they are GIRLS. The situation could have easily been diffused. One of u said they should be euthanized...are u serious?
I'm done...you guys are comedyComment

Re: Discuss.
Well your first alternative of just letting her go isn't really an alternative given that the very reason he was there was to enforce this law and more importantly (despite the fact that I have my own problems with authority) someone whose job relies on his authority can not let someone simply walk away when they decide to ignore him.
Your second alternative may very well have happened. The video picks up well after he has already gone up to confront the girl. Given the way she was resisting his attempts to subdue her, whatever he did when he first confronted her was likely met with hostility. And remember, he didn't punch the girl who he was trying to subdue, he punched the girl who came in after the fact trying to push him off of her friend.Comment

But "what about" this!....
If a P.O. asks you to stop...what would you do?
...but you are right in one regard....it very easily could have been diffused....let's see...how could that have been?
....thinkin'....nope can't figure out an easy way.

Re: Discuss.
Did the cop try and diffuse the situation? Or did he go from "Hey, come here!" to putting his hands on her and never letting go?
If he tried to calm her down, and tried to reason with her, but she still acted belligerent, I'll side with the cop. If he was calm and merely tried to talk to her and let her know what she did, and she still ignored him and kept walking. If he told her she was getting a citation, and if she still waked away. If he told her that if she didn't stop that she'd be placed under arrest, and she still kept walking away and ignoring him...and then he got physical, I'd side with him.
However, if he had his hands on her from the start, and never once let go to try and calm her down, he deserves just as much blame as the girl.Comment

Re: Discuss.
You know if you respect people in law enforcement about 99% of the time they will treat you with the same respect.
But then again, that's a major problem with society today.Comment
