Probably in part because the NFL does a much better job of advertising than MLB does. I completely forgot there was a game last night, and if I hadn't seen your post in this thread I wouldn't have known there was a game on right now. I'm sure the WS stinking over the last 7 or so years doesn't help. I think last year is the only time the losing team won more than one game since the Giants/Angels series went 7. EDIT: I guess the Yankees did it in 2003, so it's happened twice since 2002.
For me I tend to lose interest in baseball once football starts up and that means I pay much less attention to it. I watched a MNF game last year over the WS (Interesting side note, that game also had Cliff Lee pitching), and that wasn't because I forgot the game was on. The last time I really remember sitting down and watching the world series was 2004, and I think that's only because I wanted to see if Boston could win.
