Re: OS Book Club Pt II

Currently read Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand, who also wrote Seabuscit.

Here is Amazon's description of the book which is based on a true story and is amazing. They def need to make this into a movie.

On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared. It was that of a young lieutenant, the plane’s bombardier, who was struggling to a life raft and pulling himself aboard. So began one of the most extraordinary odysseys of the Second World War.

The lieutenant’s name was Louis Zamperini. In boyhood, he’d been a cunning and incorrigible delinquent, breaking into houses, brawling, and fleeing his home to ride the rails. As a teenager, he had channeled his defiance into running, discovering a prodigious talent that had carried him to the Berlin Olympics and within sight of the four-minute mile. But when war had come, the athlete had become an airman, embarking on a journey that led to his doomed flight, a tiny raft, and a drift into the unknown.

Ahead of Zamperini lay thousands of miles of open ocean, leaping sharks, a foundering raft, thirst and starvation, enemy aircraft, and, beyond, a trial even greater. Driven to the limits of endurance, Zamperini would answer desperation with ingenuity; suffering with hope, resolve, and humor; brutality with rebellion. His fate, whether triumph or tragedy, would be suspended on the fraying wire of his will.

In her long-awaited new book, Laura Hillenbrand writes with the same rich and vivid narrative voice she displayed in Seabiscuit. Telling an unforgettable story of a man’s journey into extremity, Unbroken is a testament to the resilience of the human mind, body, and spirit.

Read that book about a year ago. Most people would have committed suicide after enduring what he did. Horrible what he went through as a POW in a Japanese Camp. One of the most inspirational and best books I've ever read.

I'm almost done with Mockingjay. Definitely the weakest of the trilogy, but still a good read. I wasn't sure I was going to like the series but my wife (English teacher) kept pushing me to read them, and I'm glad she did.

I really need to find more time to read. I used to knock out 1-2 books a month but I've been stuck on Mockingjay for 5 months due to my work schedule and impending move. Hopefully when we get settled next month I'll have more time.

Few months back I got a big shock when I stumbled onto the Time top 100 novels list. I have always read a lot but was shocked at how few of these books I have read....4. (1984, Lord of the Rings, The Big Sleep and The Watchmen)

Guess I was always more of a genre reader. And even though I know the list is subjective, figured it's a good start at broadening my list a bit. I have read 24 more now and do plan on completing the list.

What's your guys average of this list? I tend to find for most people who don't lie and count movies....it's not that high.

Way late here, but I've only read eight as well. Seven of which were in middle/high school (A Clockwork Orange being the other).

I started reading Atlas Shrugged four years ago and I haven't finished it yet. For some reason I can only read it for a few hours at a time before putting it down for another few months.

I'm reading Conn Iggulden's last installment of his series about Rome. This man can write! His Genghis Khan series is unbelievable. If you like historical fiction or stories about ancient/medieval times then give him a try. I got my friends reading George R.R. Martin and then introduced them to Iggulden...they like Iggulden even more.
