I never should have watched the coverage today.

What an emotional day. People talking about their fathers and how much they still love them.

I absolutely cannot wait for the NFL to start today, because it's depressing and incredibly sad.

    Everyone stay safe today.

I also remember scanning every cable channel I could, to try to measure exactly how big of a deal this was. Many, many channels switched over to 24/7 9-11 coverage, including MTV. There may have been stations simulcasting national channels like ABC as well, which unaffiliated stations would never do under any circumstances (so I thought).

I was at work. I remember it like it was yesterday. I was at work. I was listening to Howard Stern and he was making fun of an idiot in a commuter plan hitting WTC. Then it suddenly got real, never in my life had I heard Stern change like that. Then I knew something was wrong.
Just found that 20 minute Howard Stern clip on YouTube. Nuts.

Re: Where Were You on September 11th 2001?

I was a Senior in HS in Oregon...so the planes hit around 6 AM. My mom came into my room and said my dad had just witnessed a plane hit the WTC. I honestly didn't think much of it until I saw the amount of smoke coming out of the buildings.

I was in the shower when my sister pounded on the bathroom door and yelled "THEY HIT THE PENTAGON!!!!"

I was watching it on TV when the towers fell. It was so surreal, sickening....so many emotions I can't put it into words.

My first class was Government...so we just watched coverage on TV. My second class was a writing course and my teacher turned off the TV and said, "we've seen enough of this, we need to get to work." Half the class got up and left.

I spent the rest of the day at a buddy's house watching.

I still don't think, even 10 years later, that I can actually grasp the enormity of the event. Probably never will.

Re: Where Were You on September 11th 2001?

Ill share my story with you guys.

I was in MPI school at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo doing my first run through of the "crime scene". Imagine a hallway with nothing but little rooms running up both sides with people sitting at desks in the doorway.

Anyway, we are all processing our scenes when someone who had gone to the bathroom comes in and says a "plane ran into a building in New York". "The top of the building is like hanging there or something".

Nobody really payed it much mind. He was walking passed an Officers course that had CNN on in the classroom and caught just a glimpse.

A few minutes later someone else is like hey, I think people are deliberately crashing planes in NYC. Everyone basically piled out of the hallway and went to the classroom with CNN, and then people started getting "weird", like wanting to call home and getting a little emotional. I was just in a state of disbeleife, and when I heard "a plane crashed into the WTC", I thought a little Buddy Holly plane or something, not a commercial air liner. So when I saw the planes hitting, it was unbelievable. literally.

Instructors come in and are like "I know you guys want to see this, but we have work to do, so get back to your room."

We all went back, but nobody was doing anything but talking about it, and talking to each other, nobody was processing crime scenes.

A few minutes later, the instructor walks in and says "The Pentagon was just attacked, we are officially at war, another plane is en route to Washington D.C" He said it so calmly and matter of factly that it still gives me chills thinking about it.

At that point they sent everyone back to the Barracks. I had my wife with me ,so I raced back to wake her up. It was just insanity from that point. We watched the towers fall, tried to call people back East and the phones were all dead.

We watched for probably 2 hours, and they called me back to the school house at about 1. They were sending everyone home at that point. They were giving us instructions, telling us we would be able to come back to the course, etc.

That lasted maybe an hour, and a crazy hour it was as I didn't have a unit. I had left my previous base and was en route to Hawaii, this was a 2 month course en route. I had no home lol. So they told me to sit tight, let them handle everyone else. Before long, plans changed as the airlines were all shut down, so before anyone could really do anything as far as leaving, they realized nobody was going anywhere.

In the end we basically went home that afternoon and were glued to CNN until the next day. They still held out the idea they might shut down the course, but they never did. They tried to send some NYC soldiers home, but weren't able to, and they ended up staying through the course. October 20th, we all graduated and went back to the real world, where it hasnt been the same since, and we are still at war today...

Scott, that was possibly the saddest thing I've ever seen or heard in my entire life, but I'm still glad I watched it.

It's days like today, that remind us just how petty most of our complaints about life are.

I was at home. I slept in late. I turn on the computer and looked at the home page of AOL, and my mouth dropped. Turned on the TV news and started think was Chicago next.

I was 23 at the time and got back late from a friend's so I crashed on my mother's couch.

Phone was ringing pretty early, my mother was rushing out the door yelling "oh ****, oh ****"... turned the TV on real quick before she left and within 5 minutes saw the second plane hit.

She responded to me, "oh sh*t we are under attack"! Then stormed out the door to the response of the call from her employers.

My mother at the time was working in a government agency I can not comment on, but since then is now in the NSA that was "newly" formed some time after.

Those words typing what she said forever is burned into my head, and literally brought tears to my eyes again. When she left I had not heard from her in a couple days. Just glued to the TV, hoping she along with everyone else were okay.

But I remember every little detail that day down to even what I was wearing. And was tough when I had a lot of friends and family volunteering out in NY. And my mother telling me I can not go to stay home and take care of the house.

Bless everyone who lost their lives that day, and everyone else who has been effected by this. And bless you all on here at OS.

Driving to work and stuck on route 3 EAST traffic when 1010 news NY broke in about a small commuter plane hitting one of the towers. As traffic was moving along, I could get a glimpse of the WTC and seeing the amount of smoke coming out and thinking, " a small plane did that"?.

As I got to my desk at work, co-workers started gravitating towards the roof/balcony of building in NJ that faces NYC screaming about a 2nd plane hitting the other tower. Needless to say, no one felt like working.

My most vivid memory is watching it live from the outside balcony when the 2 towers fell and some of my co-workers who had loved ones working there.

3rd grade, it was a half day so our day ended earlier around 12. I don't really remember during the actual day itself other then I believe you could kinda tell there was something going on. My grandma was PE teacher here and worked aftercare so I went to aftercare as normal, played our usual football game and stuff on the backfield.

Pretty soon tho I heard the call to come up to go home which I thought was weird cause it was only like 12:30 and my grandma was in school meetings until atleast 2 and usually go home with her at like 5 or 6. I remember by Mom sitting on one of the benches in school crying just to explain to me this. I became pretty worried like I was kinda scared to go to bed that night and as a kid in FL you'd go to Disney a lot so I was worried would it get bombed or whatever next time I went, etc. Also my real dad was in the Navy and I believed was living around D.C. at the time so there was that as well

Worked at that same aftercare last year, the day after we found Bin Laden went to that same bench and just sat there for a min.

Junior year at USC. Was sitting in Animal Behavior class. A few people's cell phones started going off. One girl raised her hand and said to the professor (paraphrasing) "I don't mean to interrupt you but a plane just flew into one of the twin towers."

After a couple more calls and hearing that a 2nd plane hit the other tower he stopped the lecture and turned on the tv and we talked about what it all meant for the rest of the class.

The rest of classes that day were cancelled.
