So I'd thought I'd made myself look like an idiot with my first post being a thread bump...glad It didn't.

I must reiterate that the Gulf is part of the Atlantic Ocean. Point blank.

                This thread is 4 pages.

                That is amazing.

The Gulf of Mexico will always be part of the Atlantic Ocean.

Re: OS Geography Class (Gulf of Mexico)

I said it's not part of the Atlantic Ocean. If we were going to play that game, then it could also be considered part of the Pacific Ocean because of the Panama Canal. If we continue, we could say the Arctic Ocean is not an ocean at all, and is really part of the Atlantic as well. We could go even further and say the Indian Ocean is not an Ocean, but is part of the Pacific. Or, we could go further and say that the Pacific is really the only ocean in the world because it is the largest and the Atlantic, Arctic, and Indian Oceans are all connected to it.

Is the Mississippi Rive part of the Gulf? No. Is the Missouri part of the Mississippi? No. Just because a body of water is a tributary, doesn't mean that it is a part of what it flows into. The Amazon and Nile are also considered to be completely separate bodies of water too.

I wonder what the people down in the Capes in South America and Africa consider to be which ocean.

First of all, the Panama canal is a man-made structure. Second of all, the Panama canal connects the Pacific Ocean with the Carribean Sea, not the Gulf of Mexico.

Next, as I said in an earlier post in this thread, the worlds oceans are defined by geologic and tectonic boundaries. Though there was a time when the Pacific was indeed the only ocean in the world. Back in the Late Permian/Early Triassic when Pangea was fully intact, though that ancient ocean is generally referred to as Panthalassa

Finally, it makes no sense to compare rivers to seas. And of course the Nile and Amazon are considere completely separate bodies, they're on 2 separate continents.
