One piece of advise I can pass on regarding buying a new house is to keep looking until you and your wife are 100% sure that is the house you want to buy. Don't let realtors or friends/family influence your selection. Realtors have their agenda while family/friends have their own tastes.

We had to settle on a home because my wife was pregnant and we needed more room. The house was nice but still not our dream house.

        Words of wisdom^^

A lot of people got burned from 2005-2007 thinking that way.

Re: For all of you guys who are homeowners or newly owned

We're still stuck fighting the builder trying to get out of our contract after the basement flooded right before we were supposed to close. It sounds like we could finally be done with this nightmare this week, and move on to buying a house without a lake in the basement. We've already found one we're wanting to put an offer on as soon as we're out, so hopefully it'll just be a few more weeks in the in-laws basement.
Big tip for anyone planning on building a house: Under no circumstances should you ever agree to move into your in-laws basement.

Re: For all of you guys who are homeowners or newly owned

The one thing about my new house that I don't like is the fact the yard isn't fenced in. I mean I know I can always fence it in, but we probably won't be able to do it for about a year or so. I really want to have a place where my dogs can run and I don't have to worry about them.

I'm getting so antsy to move in. Still not sure of the exact date. I am so stressed. Trying to get things ready to move is overwhelming.

Re: For all of you guys who are homeowners or newly owned

Ugh lol Our garage door (which we knew was original, so old) finally wore out the slider on our opener. Have to replace the door cause the weight would kill our opener otherwise (and there's a bunch of cracks and weaknesses on the door).

I'm getting our quarterly bonus so that'll go to a new door getting put in today.

At least now we won't have to worry about it for 15 years. Oh the joys of owning a house sometimes!

For guys that are currently homeowners, do you see significant tax savings when you file? I keep hearing that the tax benefits of home ownership is great.

Re: For all of you guys who are homeowners or newly owned

                    The short answer: Yes
                    The long answer: No

I'm getting a tax break because I pay an absurd amount of interest on my home loan. I have the standard 30-year loan. I will never make that mistake again. I would rather put more equity into my home by having my payments chip away at the principal instead of the interest. Paying the mortgage feels like treading water and I'm about four years into the mortgage.

It's such a smart "scheme". Buy a home, get a tax break...but really we take all the money up front and give you some back which you'll just dump into the economy anyways because let's face it Americans don't save much.

                        years?

I believe something was changed back in April

                          That might be the difference

I thought it went away when you had 22% of your principle paid, and if you did that before 2 years you'd have to petition to get it removed, otherwise it happens automatically.

Once you hit that percentage you've got enough in the house where it's not really a risk to them.
