Maybe you're taking the "If You Ain't First, You're Last" quote too seriously.

As a fútbol (soccer) fan where the isn't Nº1 pick or something like that I will always prefer being close and losing than having a mediocre year specially when your team is one of the best in your country (Nacional). Being last would be as a motivation to eternal mockery by your rivals specially if you get relegated to division 2 (like what happened in Argentina with River).

Are you sure that you could handle a season that doesn't end in a championship? I hear they can be pretty traumatic.

Are you kidding? You signed YUNI ****ING BETANCOURT this year! THE Yuni B, for god's sakes!

With him, there's no reason you shouldn't contend this year...

                      I'd rather them suck.

Watching the Orioles lose every year is obviously not what I want to do, but they don't stress me out or anything because I know they're going to suck. If they make the World Series and lose, I don't know if I'd be able to handle that mentally.

Pretty sure I'll end up blowing my brains out if a championship doesn't happen. Doesn't matter, because all championships belong to me.

We're just giving everyone else a shot or two prior to our run of 55 straight.

Speaking as someone who's had a team go 15-1 and get bounced, get to the Rose Bowl and lose, and get to the NLCS and get beat by a bitter rival this year, I can say that the stress does suck, the losing does suck, but damn is the ride fun. I wouldn't trade it for better draft position or less heartbreak. Wouldn't even consider it.

It all depends in the situation I think

NBA? Yeah I'd rather suck personally as there's only so much that can be done to improve a team.
NFL? Nope unless the team is on the massive decline then maybe u can pull a suck for luck thing
MLB? 162 game season + playoffs id rather make it as far as possible. Sure u could get a stud at #1 but it's not like the others where he starts right away

Depends, if your a Colts fan, last place , suck for Luck, in my case, Mariners, make championship and lose, Blazers, same, but it really depends on the sport, and whos the number 1 pick.

Honestly, it depends on whether your favorite team is college or pro, and what sport it is.

I'd prefer the college teams I root for to be as good as possible all the time. If that means being in the championship but losing, so be it. You get better recruits by being a bigger name college, and become a bigger name college by being good, and better recruits usually make the team better.

When it comes to pros, it's a bit of a mix. If my team has holes that need to be fixed, then I'd prefer to be last than second. If my team is in desperate need of a quarterback, then damn right I'd be on the #SuckForLuck bandwagon. But other sports where the draft order is a bit more mixed up (like the NBA), I'm not sure if I'd want to be dead last. Then you have things like auto racing where you want to finish as high as possible. Higher finish equals more money equals better equipment and better drivers wanting to sign with your team. That's why Red Bull Renaut and Ferrari will always be so dominant in Formula 1, and Hendrick will always be so dominant in NASCAR.
