Aside from skipping breakfast, that sound eerily similar to me back in high school. I guess I was an anomaly, but it's been hard to keep up now that I'm 23 going on 24.

Even for me, it's not just about obesity, but diet as well. I keep flipping back and forth between a great diet and an okay one, but man each time I see my relatives in the Philippines, that country is the epitome of not having a great diet because of the availability of certain types of foods, mainly vegetables and the amount of sodium used in most foods.

According to a recent Harvard study, they are predicting the obesity rate to peak at 42% in the future: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/40015155...r#.Tyjc1XokSuI

Obviously, that's not close to 70%, but it's still ridiculous. Obesity rates are at 34% right now for the US, which is a huge increase from about 20 years ago... please note the Marshall-esque use of charts below.

I don't think it's as simple as pointing the finger at parents, schools, the government, diet fads. etc. when identifying the problem. It's a combination of all of these things. The internet has been great in educating people about nutrition, but there's a lot of bad information out there as well.

Unfortunately, I don't think there is a simple answer to solving this.

Re: This country is dying a slow and painful death health wise.

I am curious... What is 'obesity' determined by? BMI?

I think at my height (6'5"), a 'healthy' weight for me like 195-210 pounds. I've seen charts that vary, but that is ridiculous. Some of the charts are absolutely ridiculous. I am currently at about 255, which is a bit heavy for me but I do not feel 'obese' by any means. If I weighed any less than 225, I feel like I would look like a meth head and would probably get an immediate drug test at work if I showed up at that weight. I would look skinny and sick.

I'm just curious as to what is used to determine obesity... I think a lot of the charts are laughable and the numbers that are fed to us as a society can be skewed by ridiculous weight expectations.

        Just a thought.

I always thought being obese meant you were 50+ pounds overweight according to "the chart."

I guess for the average joe BMI is ok but it's a joke if you have any sort of muscle mass at all. Most of the running backs in the nfl would be considered obese if you went by BMI....

Yeah, who knows. I posted a picture of my wife and I in the picture thread and in that pic, I am around 245... According to most charts, I am borderline obese in that picture.

Just kind of makes me laugh. Maybe I just need to educate myself more on these different charts.

I remember reading that the BMI was calculated for all NBA players years ago. The only player that wasn't considered obese according to BMI was Shawn Bradley.

It doesn't help that it's cheaper to eat unhealthy, which sucks.

                      Yep...

*Raises hand* I am one of those. I am so out of shape and about a good 25 pounds overweight. I am only 5'6" at the most and have a small frame, yet I am carrying around about 175 pounds on me. All of it on my stomach. I know I have horrible eating habits, and I know I need to change them, but I just don't make the effort. It's going to catch up with me in the long run. I need to get into a rec league and get some exercise in. Only exercising I get is playing with the kids and playing with my wife. *ba dum tsssh*

I guess it depends on what you buy. You could substitute baby carrots for chips and come out ahead.

Yeah I always thought BMI was considered kind of a joke in the sense that everyone is considered obese according to it.
