Re: This country is dying a slow and painful death health wise.
Our company started an incentive program (Rewarding Healthy Behavior) where that if you showed that you were making an effort to stay healthy, you received a small discount on your insurance premiums.
These things included - creating a weekly diet program to follow, tracking your meals for three, working out 30 minutes a day for three days a week over a 12 week period, talking to health coaches and stopping smoking.
Each one was worth a certain # of points and if you got enough points, you could get a discount.
The idea, IMO is great. A few complained that it wasn't fair (it was discriminative favorably to healthy people), but they were few and far between. The crappy thing is that it was like a $1 or $2 reduction in your premiums on a weekly basis...just not enough, IMO, to incentivize many to go through with it.
The crappy thing is, in reality, the majority pay for the minority when it comes to health insurance. Most people are healthy (enough) and those that aren't are the ones that cost the most in medical bills. I think it is something like 90% pay for the worst 5-10%.
This system, in a small way, tried to combat that, but in the end I just don't think it's enough to motivate anyone.
That is my biggest gripe about obesity. When these people get older and their health starts to deteriorate at a much faster rate, the rest of us are the ones paying for it in the form of higher premiums.Comment

At least go baked. 30 less calories and 8g less fat in a bag of Baked Lays over Classic Lays. I think they taste better too.Comment

Last time I ate chips it was Miss Vicki's kettle cooked. That's as far as I splurge, haha. Baked I never really liked for some reason - just wasn't the same.

Baked Lays are heaven in a bag, but like its been said, they are more expensive because they are better for you.Comment

To the OP:
You (and I) live in the South. The obesity rate down here (around 33%) is not reflective of the rest of the American population.
That said, there is more to a person's health than obesity, and America's health is definitely on the decline due to poorer diet and exercise habits.
Technology has made us lazier in both areas.Comment

I really need to make some changes. I lost 20 pounds in the fall and have put 9 back on, which is pretty depressing. We end up pretty bad because its cheap and fast. Its not an excuse though. We may not have a lot of money right now, but we need to figure out how to get more out of it.
I think I am going to start taking advantage of Subways $5 footlongs this month. Chicken breast on wheat instead of a Whopper value meal.Comment

I'm just glad it's not summer anymore. I was on break from school and all I did was work, eat and drink. 8 beers at the bar then a hard taco, 5 layer burrito and chicken burrito at about 1 am, two times a week. Have no idea how I only weigh 183 right now.Comment

Pretty much went almost vegetarian except eating fish this past 6 months. lost 55 pounds so far and I can't tell you enough how good it feels.
What scares me to see is that American's don't eat enough vegetables or even at all. Lettuce and tomato on your sandwich and think that's enough is a joke.
I went the extra step and eat organic. It can get expensive but if you are active and go to farmer markets, you'll get great deals and you are buying locally which means the produce will be super fresh and you will be supporting your local farmers.
Whatever it takes: grill it, steam it, eat it raw, juice it, get your veggies in your system, just don't fry it with fattening oils.
Trust me, you will become a better person. Not just health wise, but your mind will be on point too.Comment

Ms. Vickie's chips is where it's at. Nutrition facts are great on those no matter the flavor.Originally posted by J. ColeFool me one time that's shame on you. Fool me twice can't put the blame on you. Fool me three times, **** the peace sign, load the chopper let it rain on you.

I most definitely prefer baked chips over regular chips too. Crispier and less greasy.Comment

If you don't wish to give up fast food entirely, there's a book available titled "Eat This Not That" (Amazon link: http://www.amazon.com/This-Thousands.../dp/1594868549 ) which provides some food swaps and comparisons which can save you some pounds and piece of mind.
For example, one of the things in there (across multiple food swaps and infographics) is to avoid Burger King at all costs. Compared to other burger chains, they are inordinately unhealthy.Comment

However it depends on the oil you use. Coconut oil is my recent favorite to cook with!SOS Madden League (PS4) | League Archives
