So you are saying the OP never really did get ripped off but just made it up?

He made up a fake story about being an idiot?

      Really?

Well I finally opened the box. Turns out it came with no receiver. Lame. So essentially I have a really expensive/cheap paperweight. :banghead:

                Exactly.

If it was anything like this thread, then I might start asking some questions. But the OP seems legit about it, and ultimately ashamed of his actions, just making everybody else cautiously aware out of spite.

#1- I highly doubt he was charged with actually stealing the property

I deal with stolen property all day long and this would never happen in the presented manner.

The only scenario I can think of that would result in your friend being arrested is that he pawned the property after buying it. Maybe he got it for $20 and it's a $300 bow. Then he pawned it for $100 and made some money. Also he would have to pawn the item within 24 hours of it being stolen.

If he bought the bow from somebody how on earth would the police even know he bought the bow?

I've seen persons charges with Possession of Stolen Property. But it's basically a way to ensure that they show up (if they're shady and would possibly skip out on court if they were just subpeona'd without being charged).

Once the court date came, and they testified, the charges were dropped, but they needed them to be present and when its either their butt on the line (for possession) or their buddy's (for theft), they'll always testify against their buddy.

I was just about to post what I was actually questioning, but as I typed it out it came to me why the person would be approached for stealing a bow.

Because the bow was reported stolen. D'oh!

I use possession of stolen property often as well. The elements of the crime are that the person knowingly possesses property that is stolen. The most often time I use this charge is when people pawn stolen items. Upon serving warrants on the person they are usually interviewed and given a chance to explain themselves.

Then it can unfold in various ways...

Even if the bow was reported stolen, how did that guy come into contact with the police? Especially over a bow? Is this like a bow & arrow?

Bottom line: How on earth did this kid even get to the point where the police figured out the bow was stolen?

                          Sorry to hijack the thread...

But I think it's safe to say we need to get to the bottom of this!

This is the story. My friend bought the bow from an acquaintance. The guy he bought the bow from has a questionable reputation and is known for being a big time druggie.
Now this takes place in a small town. There is about 10,000 people in said town, so that is important.
The bow that my friend purchased is a pretty expensive compound hunting bow that has a serial number on it. He purchased it from the guy who said it was his and he didn't want to hunt anymore.
Well my friend took it out to the gun club range to try it out when somebody saw him with it. This person knew it was stolen and reported him to the police. Since my friend purchased it in a cash deal he had no way to prove that he bought it from somebody and since he had the stolen property the police deduced that he stole it.
The judge was lenient and gave him probation.

That is the story I was given.

Still seems weird to me. I mean as far as the other gun club patrons recognizing the bow as stolen.

Not that surprising when you live in a town of 10,000 people. I mean 10,000 people and then nothing for 100 miles...There was a guy there that recognized the bow as belonging to his friend and called it in. It had a serial number on it.
