Walking has been my exercise going on years now. I adopted this exercise from my best buddy whose philosophy was "what exercise do I enjoy and can theoretically do regularly in my 80s?" About 10 years ago, I switched from music to audiobooks and podcasts and I regularly bring along Nellie, our 3 year old chocolate lab (of course she doesn't walk and puts on a lot more miles than I do). Some days when I've had a bad day, I don't listen to anything but the sound of my feet.

My daily walk is a true pleasure of life. Great for the body and mind.

Yup, I feel the same way. Been walking regularly for three years now and it helped me lose much needed weight and get in shape. Do at least 3.5 miles regularly, while jogging the straight flat sections and I absolutely love it. I get so frustrated if there's heavy rain or snow and I get sidelined...and I loathe walking on our treadmill.

December until February is a hit or miss walking after work, so I have to settle for that godforsaken Elliptical. I will walk in rain without lightning and even bitter cold as I see that as my opponent to overcome. The thing about walking is that I don't talk myself out doing it as opposed to lifting or running.

Good for you and keep on walking! This time of year is the best time for it.

Serious question: how do you know the limits of what kind of walk/run your dog can take with you? I assume it'll just go with you as long as you go, no matter what muscles from it may be aching or even injured.

I'm sure certain breeds can go longer than others so some research will do, plus you can expand its limits along the way. Just didn't know if there was a certain training regimen or things to look out for regarding its tiredness, and what to do if you're miles from home and it actually is fatigued (like do you carry it?).

They have to build stamina just like us.

My Australian Shepherd could do a mile easily, but after she would try to turn around and go home.

Now, about 8 months into it, she can do 5 miles just fine and probably could do more if I wanted to, lol.

She is about a year and 3 months old.

Yeah, I'll see people in the summer running with their dog and I'm always wondering how long they've been running. We humans aren't very physically impressive, but we do have really energy-efficient movement and can jog longer distances than a lot of animals. Plus, we expel heat well. There's a human vs. horse race in the UK each year, humans have actually won a few times.

We also know how to pace ourselves, lol. If I am going on a walk or a jog, my dog does a great job staying with me. However, if I need to conserve energy, I know what I need to do. If I slow down a hit, she'll keep speed until realizing I'm not right next to her. It's pretty hilarious.

I used to have a dog that would refuse to walk further than like 1/4 mile from home, once he finished his business he would plant his paws and stop walking until I changed direction back home. He was adamant that this walk was over and he was ready to go back inside, either I turned around or I carried him for my own steps. He was also a tiny dog that kinda liked being carried around, so sometimes that worked out, too

edit: it wasn't that he was gassed, so probly not the best example, I'd think if he was too tired his tongue would drag to the ground and he'd just lay down and look at me like "welp, this is on you, now"

This time of the year, specifically the next 3+ months.

Weather is warm, days are long, you just feel overall better.

Helps too when you have a vacation planned during the summer. Although I somewhat hate late summer vacations because it feels like you look forward to that for most of the summer and once that's done it's almost Fall.

Ever since I was a wee lad, Memorial Day end of May thru Labor Day start of September has been my favorite time of year. It originally was because school was out but now its because of the amount of daylight hours I get. I hate looking out the window in January at 5 PM and it be dark.

I'm kinda weird about weather. I think my favorite kinda days are the light rain days to be honest. Loving reading a book on the porch with a light rain going on and a cup of coffee. I probably do prefer warmer weather over colder weather but as long as the weather isn't doing something that could potentially kill me, I'm not going to be complaining.

Even though I've been done school for years, summer still feels different than the rest of the year in that sense.

Once September rolls around it feels like a "new season/year" because of that. Although shows returning and all sports minus MLB are returning probably helps with that "new year" feel too.

Especially if that falls in April or so when you have grass seeds all over the lawn. Gets soaked in asap without you having to do so or the birds eat half the seeds.
