I notice that a guy like LeBron very rarely hangs on the rim, if at all, when he dunks 2 handed off of 1 foot. I've dunked 2 handed on 8 & 1/2, 9 foot, and 9 1/2 goals, and I just did the same thing where I dunk, and don't hang.

My question is - why the hanging? I see enough guys who never hang on the rim when they dunk two handed, so why do so many people still do it, even when everyone has seen what can happen?
Why hang when dunking two handed? Because I always thought it looked awesome when Chuck Barkley would do it and in fact, if feels awesome. I also used to watch that famous lob to Kemp against the Warriors in the playoffs, where he dunked, hung, and swung into the baseline camera. I always thought that was so legit. Maybe I'm just easily amused, but it's tough to beat a vicious throw down and wild swing. I suppose at its core it's a style thing. If I cared nothing of style and doing things that felt neat, I'd probably never try to dunk in the first place.

Nathan says he does it for safety, but I'm the complete opposite. I'm only two-hand, one-foot dunking with a hang if I know there's no one behind me because I know all it takes is one small nudge and we have an Andrew Bogut situation on our hands (I'll refrain from posting that clip here).

To me, there's just something inherently more awesome about the right amount of hang on a two-hand, one-footer. There's more authority, more power, and one can bask in the awesomeness for a moment. I find quick, two-hand, no-hang dunks to be anti-climatic. Richard Hamilton specialized in the two-hand zero hangs. I respected it, because a bucket's a bucket, but it wasn't as fun as the alternative.

I feel in both instances, had the dunks been mere throw downs with no grabbing or hanging of the rim, they wouldn't have been nearly as awesome or memorable (and probably not as fun for the players performing the acts).

ehh, I am sorry to hear what happened with your back, bro.

My back is in bad shape too, but it's manageable.

You and I would probably have some battles in the paint... But with the schools you listed that were interested in you, I think ultimately you would get the best of me.

Yup, it was on a fastbreak. It wasn't an "oh ****" kinda moment, I knew something was wrong but I didn't really notice it until the next game and that's when I realized I was screwed. Stiff as a board, no athleticism, no explosiveness anymore.

This day and age you'd probably be fine in the paint against me. I'm pretty much allergic to the paint these days lol.

Play AAU ball and varsity ball. Been playing since i was 4 or 5 since my dad used to ball all the time. I'm mostly a shooter, can get to a rack a little bit, and definitely a below the rim player. I play 110% all the time and am tenacious on defense. Got into 5 bench clearing fights last AAU summer in (compton, phoenix, vegas) all because of me. I like to chirp alot, obviously from my track record. The more i chirp and get into people, the more i get into the game. If i'm not chirping then im not playing.

But last saturday playing in a showcase in front of some scouts and hit a gamewinning buzzer beater three to win our game, first gamewinner, one of the greatest feelings in the world.

out of curiosity, what do you do when someone chirps back? like, if someone gets the best of you, and then "chirps" something to you..

Played 4 years in HS and my freshman year of college. Was always a excellent ball handler and shooter. My weaknesses would be lateral quickness, not so much in high school, but in college I wasn't explosive as I would have liked to be speed wise. I'm sure if I didn't quit, I would have gotten there. I used to be able to dunk, but a broken ankle later (that occured in baseball -___-), I still haven't been able to get back to my prior leaping ability.

As far as chirping, I would only talk to the person I was guarding/who was guarding me. Not out loud. It wouldn't be anything derogatory, just little quips that would get under their skin. I thrived off it, I played that much harder when I knew I was getting under there skin. Never got in any fights though. Had a few confrontations, but in competition, that is expected.

Yeah, I wasn't figuring that you would shut up. I never talk, but when I do it's because someone runs their mouth at me, and I'll get the best of them, so I'll talk **** the whole way back down the court.

Where I play, if you talk ****, and someone gets the best of you, you have to go back at them. And, if you get the best of them, they have to come back at you. I've played in a couple of games where this has turned into a game of 1 on 1 for a few possessions. haha

I talk **** in the beginning. My first point is usually when I say one thing. After that, I'm done. I examine their game, I don't look to score for a few possessions, then the birds come out.

Once they start talking, I'm unleashed. And I'm not only talking, I'm yelling, shoving you, saying things that if I wasn't 6'5 , you'll prolly wanna kill me.

Interesting. I never talk whatsoever unless I'm just screwing around with my friends. When I play legit, the only talking I do is calling for the ball if I'm open, calling out man, etc. Guys generally look at me (5'10", 140 lbs, white with curly hair) and start talking **** right away calling for the ball and calling for clearouts and stuff. That's my favorite. I've played with a couple of the guys that are next in line to become the walk-ons here at Syracuse and they'd all try to get the ball and isolate on me and I shut each and every one of them down and make them look BAD in the process. If they try to just post me up, I put all of my weight into them so they can never get into decent position and I make life a living hell for them.

But yeah, since I'm personally quiet on the court, my teammates do the talking for me once I start knocking down shots in guys' faces. It's so nice now that I finally got good at creating my own shot off the dribble.

Unfortunately, I haven't played in about a month now and there's a chance I might end up having to give up sports depending on if I have surgery on my thumb or not. I already had surgery on it once this past summer where they had to remove a bone from my thumb, but the pain is starting to come back so I might have to get my thumb fused, in which case I won't be able to bend it at all at one of the main joints.

Same here. I'm not a fan of talking trash. To be cliche, I let my game speak, for better or worse. More times than not, the folks I play against who run their mouth and truly believe what they're saying, are not having the effect they think they are.

Also, if something being said or done is repeatedly leading to bench clearing brawls, I feel it may be time to re-evaluate one's actions. Something is clearly going on beyond merely playing head games. Even if one feels that just means the trash talk is super effective, I think it might be time to dial it back and attempt to up the effectiveness of one's play instead.
