    Re: Anyone here Vegan?

I've had beef, tuna, pork, and chicken all within the past 24 hours..

Unless I was forced, there's no way I could do it...

      Re: Anyone here Vegan?

I've been a strict vegetarian for a little more than 4 years now. It's just second nature to me.

Going all out vegan isn't for me though. In addition to enjoying a pint of Ben & Jerry's from time to time, I also really enjoy my leather boots, belts, furniture, baseball gloves, etc. etc. Real vegans don't even use leather goods.

To those interested, I typically recommend trying it for a week or so and seeing what they think of it for themselves. Throwing animal slaughter videos in peoples faces just makes them defensive.

If anyone is legitimately curious though, check out forks over knives on netflix or online.

This is about the only thing that bothers me about the whole vegetarian/vegan thing. The assumption that everything you see in those videos is indicitive of how farming/slaughter houses actually work. It's not. I grew up on a farm, we raise(d) cattle (any more we only have two), pigs, sheep, and chickens, along with a few other things that were only for hobby farming. I'll grant you that most factory farms aren't as safe/humane as they possibly could be, but they are a lot better than what you see on commercials/TV/etc..... Now, I don't know if you've ever heard of Temple Grandin, but if not, you should look her up. She made advances that made slaughter houses much more humane. Also, For every big factory farm that doesn't do things quite the right way, there are tons of smaller places and smaller farms that do. Just had to throw that out there. Not saying that you think that way, it's just that whenever this gets brought up, I get a little indignant (sp?) about it just due to the fact that I grew up around the industry and what you see on TV is not at all what I have experienced.

That's about exactly what I wanted to say. The only reason I couldn't say it was because I never lived or worked on a farm.

Definitely. Which is why I always try to say factory farms instead of just farms. And I dont generalize what you see in videos even to all of them. But even with the advances, I don't think you could say the animals in the large factory farms where the majority of products come from have a decent quality of life. I do know that not every farm is that, however.

I am relieved to hear you say that, because with a lot of people, hitting that topic is like talking to a wall. They absolutely won't believe that things are done any differently at other, smaller farms. I absolutely agree that the factory farms don't do a great or even a good job but not as bad as some of the videos make them out to be.

                Re: Anyone here Vegan?

Been eating a vegan diet for about 2 months now after watching a movie called "Forks over Knives" on netflix.

I had high blood pressure/cholesterol and I'm also diabetic. I used to take meds for high blood pressure/cholesterol and no longer take them since they are at healthy levels now. I used to take 3 meds for diabetes, that's been cut down to 1 now.

What is surprising is my energy and strength levels have improved since doing the diet. I thought I couldn't maintain my workouts but I actually do more now than ever before.

More power to anybody who could be vegan. I love meat and animal products too much. I could probably be a vegetarian for maybe a week, but I have to have cheeses and things of that nature to go with my rabbit food.

Yeah cheese is ok on a vegetarian diet. I wouldn't expect people to give up meat cold turkey but to give up certain meats which do more harm since they have a high level of saturated fat and cholesterol: red meat and pork.

I have a couple friends at work that have done that and they have gotten really good results with their weight loss and they feel a lot better too.

I started doing that and eventually just stopped eating chicken and fish, then stopped eating dairy products.

Serious question here. Is there a reason cheese is okay on a vegetarian diet?

I guess the reason is that you are not eating anything that once has lived. So dairy, honey and some consider eggs to be ok. Vegans don't eat anything that has lived or comes from animals at all.

I wouldn't wanna become a vegetarian because it would limit my meals too much. I have a hard enough time rotating between meals. I feel like without meats, it would be the same main ingredients, with a little spin on them.

It doesn't contain flesh from a living being that once had a respiratory system.

I am a lacto-vegetarian, which is the most common type. I eat everything besides meat and eggs.
