I set a goal and accomplished it.

Completed my bartending/mixology course. Now a certified bartender and mixologist. Also holding certifications in hospitality beer & wine service.

My boss and I had discussed bringing up my future in June when I told him I'll be making a decision. So I passed my tests on June 1st and check my emails to discover he is promoting me in title.

I found that move to be snaky. Knowing full well we were set to talk, he dangles a title in front of me. There's no doubt in my mind the timing is purposeful, and while I appreciate the move (and accepted it because, you know, resume!) I told him we still need to discuss my future after our intense schedule settles down end of week.

Either way, nothing will keep me. I always said I would leave and had nothing to turn to. Now I do. Well, I do need to go job hunting but I have an actual direction that I believe will give me more personal time to give to film

Good for you! Can't believe this was 8 months ago.

Don't know how much that certification is going to help, but it won't hurt. I don't know how it is in the city, but I've never even heard of a certification in this or mixologist. But that's a hell of a title.

Best of luck. Sounds like things are in motion.

It helps to have those certificates. It won't simply land me a job at a bar.

But I'm working on that. Gotta hustle. Gonna go to training bars and do guest bar work. Basically going to offer to work for free. That's usual practice.

None of it will come easy. I already know that, but I'm excited to do something new.

            Congrats!

As I'm sure you know, bar world is all about "who you know" (not unlike the production biz or...well...everything?)...

Good / reliable bar backs are impossible to find / keep...

Great way to get paid while networking your way into the gig you truly want...

            Keep us posted!

              Re: The Talk...With the Boss

              So, it's official.

I start anew July 1st. My last full day here is Friday June 28th.

As I mentioned previously, we both discussed the possibility of paying me per diem if he needs me for an event and I'm available. I have no problem turning down extra money.

He also asked that I expect my phone to ring when trouble arises. He will pay me as well to do tech support in a sense.

I'm okay with all that. I'll consider the event stuff another gig that I can either take or turn down. The phone stuff is just reality. I can't really not take that on especially when I know more about the software than anyone else. So I expect that. Getting money for it is bonus, really.

It was friendly. He doesn't "agree" with my decision. But I'm not angry about that. I don't expect someone to be happy about losing a good employee. But, I'm on the summer league basketball team he made and that hasn't changed. Have a scrimmage today and we expect to head to the game together. I think I'm mostly glad we can still be cool despite this.

Now I'm working on my resume and calling spots to get training and guest bar work. Once actual bar work is flowing, I'll start looking for any film work that's out there.

Really looking forward to having more control over my day-to-day.

                    Yeah, that's gonna be awesome.

Not having an actual paycheck won't be. But I have enough saved to survive the summer. Just no wild partying during that time.

I will be waking up and beating the pavement to find work before then but starting that first Saturday, I will be making it an unpaid job till I find a paid one.

Yeah, you have the right attitude! You can't be lax in this, gotta spend tons of time finding the jobs you want...otherwise it's fall, you're out of money, wondering where summer went so you could find the right job.

                        An update.

I found a new job three weeks ago.

I started my mission that first Monday after leaving my position and stopped at about 50 places over the week (except Thursday because it was July 4th).

I interviewed during an open call with a place Friday and the response was very positive from the manager and owner. Other places were positive as well but this one made me feel really good.

They called me three days later to offer me a position as a barback. I took it.

The money isn't great but it's good enough for now. My tip percentage has increased every week as the establishment becomes busier. It opened in June and is beginning to gain some traction with locals. It should get busier when school starts as there is a college campus just one block away.

The owner has told me repeatedly that he wants to train me up to become a bartender for brunch and lunch. Right now we don't have either. We are only open from 5-4 but they are working on expanding their hours

It's still very early. We just got our gas, just started a real food menu, and still hiring pieces here and there. It's actually really cool to be part of something that's growing.

Barback work isn't easy. I didn't expect it to be so no worries on my end. However I'm learning a lot about the bar. The bartenders have been great at teaching me how to keep things moving and everyday I get a little bit more familiar and faster and ready to learn something new.

The only issue is the pain my legs are feeling from all the running around. I climb a flight of stairs to get to everything including the ice box so it's been a nice workout. I relish the days off to rest but enjoy my time there.

The benefit is less time staring at a computer screen while sitting. It's painful but I like that I'm active. It's keeping me lively. And not staring at a computer screen all day was one of my goals in finding new work. So I'll take it.

                          Good stuff.

You'll get your legs under you, too.

It is exciting to be a part of something new. That location sounds perfect. College kids will slam your place soon enough. Good thing you've got the summer to get ready for that.
