Re: Hostess going out of business
...and the only reason it's even REMOTELY anywhere near politics is because I used a city govt. as the example.
Has nothing to do with actual politics though as you could replace Company X for N.Y.C. and it's the same thing going on everywhere.
Please....don't even try to drag it down by even attempting I was violating T.O.S.
That's nonsense.

Going to the grocery store this morning. Will try to pick up one last box of Twinkies and commence to devour them in less than a day like always.

Re: Hostess going out of business
I will say this much. Once you give something up - good luck getting it back. When the economy first tumbled I was working in a retail furniture store/warehouse. They got rid of profit sharing, froze raises, and cut hours on the workers in the warehouse. On the sales floor they cut hours, but increased the hourly rate which meant you had to sell even more to make commission every month. While the warehouse workers didn't see a raise for 18-24 months, the sales staff received at least one pay raise.
5-6 years later and it is the exact same. I doubt they will ever get 40 hours back. Raises (the highest raise you can get is a 3% bump which in of itself is pretty laughable) are sparse. I don't think the business stopped making a profit. They've always been a cash financed company so they have no debt to worry about. Every single decision they make takes money out of their employee's pockets while their VPs will tour the stores in Bentleys, Maseratis, Mercades, etc. It hurts employee moral, but since that information is not readily transformed into numbers its not given as much weight as other easily quantifiable measures.
When I was going through my college of business courses they stressed the importance of community involvement and building as responsibilities of a business. Yet, I feel businesses are doing less and less. There are businesses that are still responsible on a corporate level and you can tell their employees love to work there, but those examples are getting few and far between nowadays.

All ill say is this. I don't understand how a min wage employee can think he has the same right to cash as a CEO. Guess what, your easily replaceable and offer limited long term value, the CEO is there for a reason.

Re: Hostess going out of business
If you're a CEO of a company and the only way you can keep your business open is to take from your employees.....you weren't much of a CEO to begin with and IMO should have been replaced a long time ago.
Bottom line....Interstate wanted to rid itself of Hostess and Wonder.
This was a great way for them to do it without looking like the bad guy.
They actually got to make it look like it was the union that shut them down.
I'd laugh if people who "are replaceable"(isn't everyone really) weren't getting hurt in the process.
It seems to me I saw this scenario in a movie once.

Re: Hostess going out of business
It all starts at the minimum wage employee, they just might have a part in making the product.
And I disagree that a minimum wage employee offers limited long term value. Our son in HS, a stocker, works at a unionized grocery store. Someone came in and bought the grocery store. Everyone was nervous that their job was going to be eliminated and they would be shown the door. Our son is the least worried. Do you think the new owner will go after minimum wage part-time workers or workers that work full time with 10 or more years of experience making a decent wage, if they let anyone go?Comment

Re: Hostess going out of business
WTF are you talking about? Interstate Bakeries changed it's name to Hostess Brands a couple of years ago, there is no more Insterstate Bakeries to want to shut anything down.
BTW, the Teamsters blame the Bakers union for getting Hostess shut down. That's another union saying a union went wrong here.Comment

Re: Hostess going out of business
For that matter, Hostess Brands has changed hands numerous times since 1930.
Also, the AFL-CIO President has a quote in our business section this morning:
What's happening with Hostess Brands is a microcosm of what's wrong with America, (I won't quote the rest) "Crony capitalism and consistently poor management drove Hostess into the ground, but it's workers are paying the price."
I fault both parties for not coming together for a workable solution.Comment

Minimum wage needs to be set somewhere and you need to work in the confines of what system is already in place.Comment
