I agree with this, but at the same time it is approaching sham status.

With the increasingly saturated job market and "buying power" of a college degree decreasing; the cost of going to college should be going down or leveling off. It's not and the interest rates are borderline predatory lending in some cases.

Its the "one size shoe fits all" system that they preach to you once you hit 8th grade. College college college. Life plan. Etc. Its bull****. There's a ton of people who go to college who really do not belong much less know what is a good career fit for them. Some people's talents lie in law, accounting, medicine etc that requires extra education and study; others excel in trade jobs where experience and an apprenticeship is all that is needed.

I pretty much lucked into picking a career that lines up with my personality, but a lot of people aren't that fortunate.

Ever since I realized in middle school (like, the 6th grade) how few football players are good enough to make money off of it I realized I wanted to be a commentator.

My freshman year of high school was when I realized that when it came to writing I was considerably better than most all my classmates Add to the the fact that around that time I realized that there are even fewer commentators than players, I guess you can say I always knew what I wanted to do.

To me it's baffling how people can get to college and still not know what they want to do, much less change their major 3 or 4 times.

It baffles me that this baffles you. It takes some people almost their entire career to find their calling. At 18 I didn't even truly know what my favorite food was, much less what I wanted to do my entire life.

I actually changed my major once during my freshman year. I was working for a large corporation and was getting promoted quickly. I had a promising future there and they discussed transferring/promoting me. However, I realized being a business major wasn't for me and changed it to criminal justice. Ultimately, working in the corporate world wasn't for me and business classes in college were boring/difficult.

I do remember though people changing majors often and still weren't 100% sure on what to do after college.

I still don't seem to have one of my own, so I consider anyone who knows what they want to do for a career VERY lucky.

I mean I'm not saying you should get to college and have just ONE job in mind, but you should have a pretty broad idea of what you like and what you see yourself doing.

A lot of people who graduated from my high school knew what they wanted to do because of the Senior Project we had to do. And on the other hand it also helped people realize that their dream job wasn't their dream job after all.

I changed my major twice this past summer, but that was because I was trying to figure out the right one for pursuing coaching. I'll never change it again.

I can see how it'd be easy to get to college and not know what to do. High-school seems to be all about pushing the student body into the college process and developing a weird "life plan" that really doesn't even begin to be a reliable, realistic exit plan for college.

There isn't a focus on picking the right college and major to complement your skills and what you enjoy in order to jump-start a career. Much less any thought/research into the actual career you intend take on after college. I don't remember any meetings with my guidance counselor where I was instructed to form any kind of thought process behind college/career other than "well, what do you enjoy?"

My World History professor was shocked today that his syllabus that he emailed didn't format right when his students opened it.

He created it on his home computer which is an 18 year old DOS and then lamented technology for 10 minutes before telling us that our society is going to all kill each other someday.

                              So that was fun.

Old professors are the best. I had a geography teacher that was using the same handouts he used in the 80s. I know this because the USSR and countries like Yugoslavia were still on there.

I also had a world history professor that taught an entire lecture about the Middle Ages in full chain-mail armor while carrying an actual sword from that era. He also brought in battle axes, old money, and an actual Viking helmet. Picture Milton from Office Space, and Dwight Schrute meshed into one. Plus 30 years. He was awesome. Oh and he has a website! http://www.summahistorica.com/ There's a picture on there that only begins to describe how crazy this guy was.
