Re: Off Topic 2013
I don't fully understand the younger generation. My niece is a freshman in college. She was given $2,000 for food & supplies and told make it last 4 months. Guess how much money she has left ?
$300. She got the collective WTF from her mom and grandparents. Apparently my niece, like most in the younger generation don't know the value of money. She is eating 7 times a day. Going to Starbuck all the time buying that over priced tea and bagels. Going to steak houses and sushi bars. So because of this, she has gained 50 pounds already.
Changed her major 7 times.....Grades are pretty low because of doing her home work and going to class, when she isn't eating all day, she is watching movies all day. One of her room mates is the daughter of this high end clientele movie distributor. You know the people where rich people and the president get copies of movies from to keep them from going to public movie theaters ? Yeah, her room mate dad does that. So therefore her room mate gets all the movies too from her dad.
I told people before, you have to stay in your financial lane. Her room mates are rich, like they drive a mercedes as a freshman in college around campus type of rich. They have their own AMEX cards type of rich. Told her before you can't spend like they do. Stop eating fast food and over priced food every day. You aren't rich, better go to Walmart and get you a 48 pack box of Ramen noodles and a shopping cart full of hot pockets.
I just don't understand it. My younger brother did the same thing when he was in college. Went out of his financial lane trying to stomp with the big dogs spending money he didn't have and not going to class. Where my brother end up ? Kicked out of college after 1 year. I told my niece she is on the verge of being just like him.
Is the taste of freedom that toxic to young people they don't know how to handle it ? Kids get to college and they just go crazy.....Comment

Re: Off Topic 2013
Young people making poor financial decisions is nothing new. Sounds to me like she's trying to keep up with her more well off friends by frequenting the places they do. Which is also nothing new. Some do this until the day they die.Comment

Budget and finance needs to be taught in high-schools. Its scary when a lot people don't even know what a reconciliation is.

I'm also pretty sure you don't declare your major as a freshman. Perhaps getting accepted into some type of program to go to that school... but I went to two different universities and never "officially" declared a major.badComment

It's college. That's where you make mistakes and start learning how the "real world" works. I made plenty of mistakes my first year or two of college and I turned out fine. I guarantee I'm not alone. Cut her some slack. If she's as bright as you've said she is in the past, she'll learn.Comment

Re: Off Topic 2013
I'm assuming he means she decided on a new major 7 times. No way she can officially change it that many times in 2 months as a freshman. Do schools even let you declare that quickly? I remember end of soph year we had to declare, for financial aid reasons more than anything really.Comment

Re: Off Topic 2013
Yeah, that is what I meant, she decided on a new major 7 times. She is just lost with no sense of direction and quickly learning real life is not like it is on movies and tv shows.Comment
