I've always felt as though it should be an establishment's choice. I don't really have a problem with the smoking ban - the bar is the only place I ever smoked inside anyway - just don't think it's fair, or right to tell establishment owners they can't allow a legal habit inside their walls. Non-smokers don't have to visit places that allow smoking, and smokers don't have to visit places that don't allow smoking. Just my 2c though.

          Perfectly said, my thoughts exactly.

This is great in theory but every since the cigarette came out it was that way and it just didn't work. Bars and restaurants are pretty much forced to try to accommodate both smokers and non smokers because if theres no law then they can't stand alone and just be one or the other or they lose a lot of business.

And when they try to accommodate both we end up with a smoking section that is right beside a non-smoking section and thus, in reality, it makes the entire restaurant or bar a smoking restaurant or bar.

Since the smoking ban in Ohio I've read MANY statements from bar and restaurant owners saying how thankful they are to simply be non smoking and have that "level the playing field" because before the ban if they went non smoking they couldn't survive financially as smokers would go down the road to a smoking establishment.

In 2002/03, I would agree with this sentiment, that's the way every business felt to me. Today, if we were to convert back to that system, I think it would be even as far as smoking/non-smoking establishments. I know of more than a few bars that have shut down thanks to the smoking ban here in Wisky, not that they would come back from the dead, but I don't think it's necessarily fair.

Also, I always felt the smoking/non-smoking section BS was futile, I think we'd see a few places try it, but overall, I don't think that would come back. We have evolved as a culture I feel.

I don't think if we went back to that old system it'd be even, most businesses would want to cater to both and would attempt to do as they did before. I'm sure some would stick with non-smoking but not many as their competition would be getting more business than they if they catered to both. I think a ban on all is the most fair way to keep all businesses on the same playing field.

Btw I'm a bit torn on this because I do see peoples point that if you own a business you should really have that choice but I think for health reasons of workers and non-smokers the ban is the only way to go.

I also think if you could see 10 years into the future it's a future where the only places one is allowed to smoke is in their home or car. And in the car only if children are not present. That's just the way things are heading. Yes smoking is legal and will not be banned anytime soon as it would be too much tax revenue lost but that will not change the increasing sentiment against it due to second hand smoke and people's desire to minimize it.
