Sort of a WTF, but more so it's a question of... what do you do in a scenario like this? I'm talking long-term, not the incident itself.

What I'm surprised about is that there isn't a charge for attempted murder. Isn't attempted suicide still a crime, technically. This guy will no doubt get a battery of psych tests and hopefully they can treat him in prison. Too many variables.

This is something people don't take into account when they hear the number of individuals killed by police. Suicide by cop is very real and happens more frequent than you would think.
