Sorry to change gears here...no easy way to do that after that tragic incident.

This is more from the "How Much Money Are You Wasting to Send Your Kid to an Ivy League School?" department:

Well, considering they lost the debate, "smart moves" wouldn't be their strong suit.

School District Agrees to Pay $600,000 to Families of Teens Who Died After Principal Hypnotized Them

Four years after one of its principals hypnotized dozens of high school students, three of whom died within days, a Florida school district has agreed to pay $600,000 to the deceased teenager’s families.

The Herald Tribune reports that, earlier this year, former North Port High School principal George Kenney admitted to hypnotizing a 16-year-old student named Wesley McKinley the day before McKinley’s suicide. Following his admission, an investigation by the Sarasota County School District revealed that in 2011 Kenney hypnotized at least 75 people at the school, including students and staff. Two of those students, 17-year-old Brittany Palumbo and 16-year-old Marcus Freeman, died later that year, Palumbo from suicide and Freeman in a car accident, bringing the hypnotism-associated number of deaths to three.

This country turning into the wild wild west. Thank goodness she didn't kill somebody shooting multiple times in a crowded parking lot at a moving car. Who she thought she was Dirty Harry ? Having a conceal license don't make you a cop or a deputy.

Police in Auburn Hills, Michigan are investigating an attempted shooting at a Home Depot, where a 47-year-old woman with a concealed carry permit tried to shoot a fleeing shoplifter, WXYZ reports.

According to authorities, the woman witnessed a man exiting the Home Depot while being followed by loss prevention officers. The man attempted to flee in a small, dark sport utility vehicle, at which point the woman pulled out her concealed 9mm handgun and opened fire in the Home Depot parking lot.

She fired repeatedly, and police believe one of the bullets struck and flattened the SUV’s tire — but the suspects, described as two males in their 40s, one white and one black, still escaped. The woman is said to be cooperating with police, who are still deciding whether to charge her for shooting up a Home Depot parking lot to stop a suspected shoplifter.

According to police, there were many people in the parking lot when the woman shot at the fleeing SUV.

Not even law enforcement would ever be justified shooting a fleeing shoplifter!

Not only that, but shooting in a busy parking lot! How no innocent people got caught in the gunfire and shot or killed is amazing and incredibly lucky for her.

She should still end up facing much deserved charges for going all Dirty Harry in a busy parking lot, but she's lucky she won't be facing potential murder charges if her stunt had resulted in the death of an innocent bystander.

Is their code enforced that strongly? Maybe they just needed a reason to fire that person.

Three weeks ago I was walking up to a Walmart entrance while some goofy dude was coming out, walking all fast, passed by me awkwardly, maybe 2 feet away, then took off running. Walmart employees came out a moment later and pointed at him, followed by a couple guys running out and chasing him.

He must've stolen something, and it made me wonder what could've been, like if I'd stuck my foot out and tripped the dude. With my luck he'd fall and break his neck and my *** would be in this thread next

Re: News that make you say WTF?

Some businesses, yeah. If an employee follows or chases a shoplifter outside the store, they could be fired. Some have been. For stores, once a shoplifter makes it outside the doors, a lot of them have policies that only loss prevention and the police are able to intervene at that point, and some not even loss prevention can still keep chase outside the doors. If the employees try to stop or detain the person and/or they end up hurt while out in the parking lot, it potentially becomes a liability and legal issue. Walmart at one point settled a lawsuit to pay out $750,000 for a 30 year old shoplifter who suffered a heart attack while employees where trying to stop him.

They also do it for employee safety. If they go chasing a guy into a busy parking lot or into a road, cars become a danger. Maybe the shoplifter has a knife or gun in their car. Who knows. And for some stores, they could consider it breaking their policy forbidding employees from touching or grabbing customers, which some have been fired for that reason as well. So many companies have policies that once a shoplifter exits the doors, employees are to stop pursuing. Failure to abide by the policy can result in termination.

For the dude fired for leaving his post, depending on what his post was, maybe it was that strict for Walmart, maybe he had been in trouble in the past and this was just the final straw with his managers, maybe they were looking for a reason to fire him because he was a horrible employee and they chose that reason. Could be a few things.

^ I don't think this was the particular incident, but it might as well be:

A vigilante Walmart manager, who stopped a shoplifter and took a punch to the face for his trouble, has been terminated. Don Watson told AL.com he was fired 27 days after he chased a shoplifter out…

Pretty much what you said. They have procedures in place for this. This one happened to be a manager.

That would be pretty funny if the Wal-Mart said: "We can't keep you on as a manager... but we're a little shorthanded here with security. What size vest you think you are?"

Wal-Mart cares very little about loss prevention. Its not hard to stop most of them (the professionals are obviously a different story), but like everything else they are short-staffed with little resources to actually do anything.

Reason why Walmart and most stores are short handed when it comes to store security is that most people can't pass the asset protection training course and get certified. It isn't as easy as you apply and you instantly be asset protection. You go through 3 to 5 weeks of training and have to be certified. Most wash out after the first week of training.

One of my friends used to do loss prevention at Walmart and got fired to not catching enough people. Apparently you have a set amount you have to catch. They get paid pretty well too.
