Re: News that make you say WTF?

I love the little stories you hear on NPR's Wait Wait, Don't Tell Me . you always hear some wild weird wacky & crazy news:

in China, a zoo found out they didn't have a wolf in their wolf exhibit; they were told what they thought was a wolf was a domesticated dog, a rottweiler in fact.

the zoo said it happened when their old wolf died and they tried to replace it. but my question is did they really have a wolf prior. for all we know their first ''wolf'' could have been a chicken, or a goat

Re: News that make you say WTF?

Well, I mean, technically they are different subspecies of the same species. Canis lupus lupus (gray wolf) vs. Canis lupus familiaris (domestic dog)

But a Rottweiler ... they don't even look like wolves. Having not heard of that show, I actually had to go to wikipedia to make sure it wasn't some sort of satirical/humor thing and it's not.

Edit: Here's a link to the story

those things, deadly dangerous. A long time ago my uncle and a date are driving, like, through Mexico. They see one on the road, drags him out of the road, and chews his face off

Just saw a news article talking about "pandemic sidewalk etiquette". Best of all, not only did the person writing the article get paid for an article like that, there was actual information from "etiquette experts" (apparently that's a profession?)

Breaking news, keep to your right....because thats never been a etiquette rule before 2020?

Although they also suggested that if it's not possible to keep your distance on a sidewalk (here's a shock, many sidewalks aren't 6 feet wide), cross the street or WALK ONTO THE ROAD to avoid someone.

Ok, sounds good. Guess I'll just step into traffic rather than brush past someone for half a second while turning my face away from them.

I didn't realise I was doing it at first but eventually I noticed I was turning my whole body away from randoms and also completely stopping till they were in the clear. nowadays I feel like I was invited to a flash mob to act like a statue, and I'm the only one to show up. the worst funny experience I've had, I started to turn away to my left only for someone else to appear there. I continued with my left turn, someone there. continued left in the fourth and last direction, I found myself completely surrounded. I kept rotating till I found myself dizzy. it felt like I was trapped in a badly directed and acted zombie apocalypse movie. I have also found I'm now calling random strangers NPC's lmao

This is why I find newspapers stupid, they have the worst articles ever. Not that I read them, but those headlines are so clickbait.

Latest article I saw is about Wikipedia editors having a gender/diversity gap issue because vast majority are men, half of which being from Europe.

Last time I checked, literally anyone can edit wikipedia, and I mean literally anyone. If numbers are skewed, it's not because of any issue, it's just normal people doing things online.

I tried looking for a recent article for more context on this, but the only somewhat recent ones I could find are that there are fewer biographies written about women on Wikipedia, which seems like a different thing than you’re talking about?

If it’s just the split on editors, then yeah, more women should edit Wikipedia. But since you said you didn’t read the article, I didn’t know if there was something more than a dumb clickbait headline.

Between making it seem like taking a step into the street to create space on the sidewalk is going to get you killed even though I do this and see others do it everyday and then saying newspapers are stupid but not even reading them, this is turning into the "Maj opinions that make you say wtf" thread.

So there is a Tik Tok thing going around challenging students to vandalize their schools by destroying bathroom faucets, classroom projectors, etc. called "Devious Lick." I didn't know about the name until today, but given that our AVP has been e-mailing staff members this past couple of weeks asking us if we could identify certain students on camera that are always coming out of a bathroom, I figure they are culprits of this very thing.

Can't these kiddos accept a challenge to... I don't know... get good grades and be upstanding citizens? Yeah, I double dare them to do that one. Or hell, go back to the Tide Pod challenge. Take yourself out without affecting others.

I don’t know which is more dumb: thinking stealing and/or breaking someone else’s property is cool & fun or filming yourself while doing it.

It’s not even an original thought or prank if a faceless mishmash of user generated content influenced you to do it. I thought the youngest generation were supposed to be trendsetters and forward thinkers? They’re just ripping off the lowest forms of society, petty thieves.

Should be getting booked for being corny as ****.

Remember when we hear our parents and grandparents complain about the current generation? I'm sure the pandemic's hit was severe enough to bolster these results but the quit rate, and the rate of rehiring, has been news worthy lately. Here's the latest measures from an employment website how each generation looks at the importance of stability in their work force.

Employers of today don’t make it worth it to stay by not giving raises, slashing benefits, managers/work environments who make it unbearable to stay, or downright abuse (hours expected, micromanaging every little detail, etc). There are people who like to job hop, but aren’t most of us craving stability and routine? But we also need to be paid respectably for the work we do and have some freedom to be able to do our work without having someone breathing down our neck.

I’m not shedding a tear for businesses that can’t find workers because the jobs they’re hiring for don’t pay well enough for the work expected. By the same token, if you quit a job and don’t have something lined up or some type of plan (and a backup to that plan as well), miss me with the tearful pleas on Facebook and GoFundMe. If you’re doing the least (as a business or as an individual) and you expect success and dollars to just fall in to your lap, think again. And sit down.

I know so many people in positions where they’re being overworked and practically harassed by management, and they’re too scared to leave for one reason or another (change, fear of retribution as two examples). And then I also know people who do 10 minutes of actual work for every hour spent at their job. I wish I could switch these folks around.

The hardest working jobs I’ve had have been the lowest paying. Those were being a food server and working in a retail stockroom. The easiest jobs have been office jobs, but they also paid the most. But I needed those early, harder experiences to appreciate the easier, less stressful ones I’ve had in my more recent work history.
