Re: Uncommon Opinions
The logic being that what you "hate" now is just a perception of a person created by media and other opinions...and possibly not even remotely accurate.
I would submit however that there is a greater chance of certain characteristics being present in people who have or need to put themselves in a position to have a media/public persona. Most top athletes are cocky because confidence is a plus in competition...Talented people are better than average people (at least in their field), and people with money tend to spend it differently than those without as much.
If you hate the trait that is present then I don't see why hating the person is off limits.I just don't buy the notion that I have to know someone to hate them. There are plenty of people I don't know personally that I hate. And there's nothing wrong with that at all. Claiming someone has to know someone to actually hate them is fantasy-land nonsense. Quite frankly, it's absurd. What, am I supposed to not hate the Sandy Hook shooter (for example) because I don't know him? Is Kanye West automatically not a punk douchebag because I don't know him even though that's what he shows to anyone and everyone?
We can only go on what we see.
This is the reason it doesn't make much sense to me. In my mind, it take a lot of effort and intention to truly "hate" someone or something. Unless a person has done something to me personally, I don't see a reason to put forth the effort to truly hate them.
It's probably more on the word "hate" than anything. I don't use it frequently as it has a strong connotation for me... that's why it surprises me when people hate someone or something they have no personal experience with. That's all.
EDIT: I'll say that obviously I understand hating mass murderers and people that are evil. It's hating people that do no real harm to you is what I don't understand.Last edited by Jr.; 06-12-2013, 12:43 AM.Comment

Re: Uncommon Opinions
Hate is an interesting word. I don't often display my hatred in terms of raging physical actions but use it as a basis to avoid things that cause it to rise. For some people hate is all consuming, for me it's a warning.Comment

Re: Uncommon Opinions
You've had decades of music since then that was influenced or a reaction to the impact that the Beatles had. Your musical tastes have, for lack of a better word, evolved from those songs (and the works they evolved from).
Clearly, I'm not saying you have to like their songs but I am saying you can't judge their impact based solely on your current tastes.Comment

Hard to judge the cultural impact of works outside the age they were created in though.

Re: Uncommon Opinions
Abbey Road is one of my favorite albums, but I wouldn't include the Beatles in my list of favorite bands. I like what they did and their progression is something few bands do today, but they're no where close to my favorite band much less favorite from the 60s.

Re: Uncommon Opinions
I know how influential the Beatles were to basically everybody the past 30 years. But looking back on them now, people still think they're the greatest of all-time, and that's great, that's their opinion, but I think they've been surpassed by many, many bands whom they've influenced.
No matter how you look at it...nothing can occur in a stasis or a vacuum. In sports, or in the arts...the next generation gets to say they have moved past the previous and the previous says they wouldn't have last in theirs.
For point of reference...your bands who have surpassed them include?Comment

That's the rub of trying to "of all time" anybody or anything.

It all comes down to personal preference, as I enjoy other artists a lot more than I do the Beatles, like the White Stripes, Nirvana, Foo Fighters, etc., but they're not as influential as the Beatles were, so it's hard to prove that they're the "better" bands.
As for bands from around the same time period as the Beatles, I'd say I enjoy the Who, the Stones, Zeppelin, and Queen more.Twitter: @TyroneisMaximus

Re: Uncommon Opinions
I find that since I didn't grow up with the Beatles (obviously, since I'm only 32 lol) I get a bit poisoned by everyone from that era going "ZOMG The Beatles are the Greatest evar!!#@!@#@"
When you start listening with that all ready in your mind seems like it makes it impossible for something to actually meet that level of hype.
I can enjoy Beatles music, just don't quite "get" them like a lot of people do I guess.Nintendo Switch Friend Code: SW-7009-7102-8818Comment

Don't get me wrong, I love a few of their songs, but I wouldn't put them in my Top 50.--
