      Re: Uncommon Opinions

Probably thinking most in terms of baseball, but I hate all pre-game ceremonial stuff.

Sometimes it could be because I feel like it's getting in the way of the actual start time, or sometimes I feel it's something I'm obligated to watch/attend/be involved in when it's happening. So this isn't just limited to MLB, it could be a game I'm playing, or heck even a softball game that I'm coaching.

Speaking of that, there is this thing here called the Little Big Game which has two intercity rival high schools play their senior game at a community park, and while the game itself is awesome and seeing a bunch of people you know, the stuff beforehand just seems to drag, even if the game itself actually starts on time.

In terms of MLB though, I love getting early to a park for batting practice (normally I want to catch the dang ball, and I have caught my share), but once it ends I feel like there is about 45 minutes of "nothingness," just anything that happens before the game after that is super mundane to me and like a chore.

I suppose I could say the same thing for all sporting events really (or heck, for a concert or something), but it mostly sticks out to me for baseball since I do all things baseball all the time. It just makes me feel like it's never going to start.

Excluding breakfast (because I need OJ every time) the majority of my meals are with nothing to drink.
I only started doing this in the last 5-7 years, & at first I didn't do it intentionally.
But now I find I prefer liquid to not get in the way of eating, at least until I am completely through. And I don't even know if it's uncommon, but once I first started doing it did seem strange & unnatural, but now I rather enjoy it.

          Does water count?

By the way, I need OJ with my breakfast every morning as well.

I was devastated upon reading we're not designed to drink while eating. To me it solved temporary indigestion, like food gets caught up because I eat too fast and drinking something sends it down faster. Then it turns out it messes with the stomachs ability break food down, and more liquid causes more acid to be produced, and then ugh, here comes heartburn

Haha well when you said you didn't want it to get in the way of eating, I thought you meant in terms of it filling you up or something, like why appetizers can be unappealing for my main course meal at times.

Is this true? I'm going to investigate this further.

The analogy I was given is that your stomach is a furnace (not the best starting point if you're weary of heartburn), and if you send food down to your stomach it has it's methods of breaking the food down normally, but if you send liquid down it extinguishes the fire that processes the food, which in turn causes the stomach to crank up the furnace into overdrive and send bonus acid which causes the heartburn. It's weird, but in a way it makes sense

Now this has to do with the state of the meal, and not its temperature or what have you?

I'm not 100% sure what you mean (temp & spice always throw me off), but I'm thinking your stomach will go into overdrive regardless.

Heartburn is simply acid being regurgitated into the esophagus from the stomach.

It's mostly caused by spicy foods, or acidic foods like citrus and tomato based foods. Onions too, along with alcohol and soft drinks.

I have to take Nexium for it. I've had chronic heartburn for years, but the Nexium does a great job helping it.

No, drinking while eating will not "send your stomach into overdrive". Your stomach is highly, highly acidic. Not quite pH 1, but way down on the scale. The water you drink with your meal isn't going to do any more or less than the food you were already eating because of the differences in the acidity.

Heartburn is a completely different response, usually related to the fact that the stomach is NOT producing enough acid to break down stronger acidic foods one might eat.

If not drinking during a meal works for you, do it. If drinking during a meal works for you, do it. The only valid argument I've heard in this situation is that drinking while eating will slow you down and help overeating. But your body is not going to punish you for drinking while eating by cranking up acid production.

Speaking of drinking while eating, maybe a weird thing that happens to me, but my brain doesn't know what to do with Yogurt that has granola in it. If I decide to drink/chug the yogurt in a hurry from the cup, it's a weird mix of not knowing whether to eat or drink .

                              Best response so far.

I seem to get a gurgly stomach if I eat an entire meal without eating. It's not uncommon for me to drink 24 oz of water during a meal.

Braggs apple cider vinegar has done wonders for me in helping correct my GERD. I went through several scopes and was placed on nexium, while yes it worked, it seemed to be a closed loop of band-aiding the problem. So I started on two tablespoons of Braggs every morning in 8oz of water. I stayed on that routine for almost 2 years until finally I stopped needing to do it. I no longer get bad heartburn or reflux/GERD. I'm not claiming its some miracle cure, just passing along what I went through with the hellish experience of GERD. I know all about the nightmare that is associated with the condition.

As a sidenote, I can't burp, never have been able to. Short version, it causes gas, acid, etc to be slowly forced up my throat especially while sleeping. It was eating away at my esophagus & I was getting bad feed back from doctors it could turn into esophagus cancer. Its due to a pressure balance issue of my esophagus. They have requested surgery to "attempt" to repair it but there is far to many possible side effects after surgery. So long story short I chose to roll with nexium, which later moved onto Braggs. Looking back on all it now, what a critical call not to do the surgery & amazing enough fix my problem with a simple cheap home "remedy".
