Re: Uncommon Opinions
the movie is better than the book (doesnt matter which book, or movie)
when I can read a book in less than 2 and a half hours, I may reconsider my position.

I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

Re: Uncommon Opinions
I often don't do or try things based on recommendations and suggestions, unless I ask for them. I could go into reasons why, if I knew what they all were.
I think it's more a matter of, "I'd like to do something on my own terms, not necessarily when prompted." It demotivates me. It might be because it creates an expectation, be it for me or the party, or both.
For example, did you know I've never seen Forrest Gump? Bizarre, right? Everybody has seen it, so why haven't I? Probably because everyone who has seen it also has urged me to. "Dude, you gotta see it!" At that point I'm like, "Ehh, I'll get to it." I know, this sounds really backwards.
[continual ranting]
SpoilerFor me, there is an art to being recommended something. It almost needs to be like an inception, a planted seed that makes me believe the idea was a genuinely original thought rather than third-party inspiration. If I was teaching one day and a student did a presentation where he thematically tied in Forrest Gump, and maybe showed a clip and it enticed me, I would go straight to Netflix or Hulu and see if it was available to stream... and I mean today, immediately, no matter how many times I passively declined seeing it before.
That is just one movie, but there are many others that are right there. I only got into Star Wars because The Force Awakens was coming out, and honestly the movies aren't fantastic (we know the prequels aren't, but VI was not good either) but I'm also not regretting having watched them at all. Anyway, it's TV shows that are probably the biggest one. This one has good reason: I literally wouldn't have time to invest in all of them even if I wanted to.
I said it before, but I think in general there is also this fear that comes with... what if I don't like it? How could I come to terms with myself to tell others that fact after every recommendation, hoping they could please me or inflict more of themselves onto me? How could I muster up the idea that I might not like what everyone else likes? I think there is something attached with that, maybe slightly. I don't consciously think that way, but looking back the first thing people want to know after I've experienced something is my opinion on it, largely to see if it matches their own or if I can thank them for said experience.
Now here's a weird one, and this is actually the reason I made this post in the first place. I'll watch videos on YouTube, some that I'll enjoy... and then the person at the end will say, "Like, comment and subscribe." I think any time that I consider doing it, I immediately have zero motivation to do so the moment after they say that. I don't want to consume something they are trying to feed me. I almost feel like every rating, comment or subscription after that was a forced hand, and not determined by free will.
I won't say it comes off as desperate, because I think it's more of a proactive marketing strategy than anything else (in fact I'm sure of it), though I won't pretend like if I do it then it is more for them than it is for me. That doesn't work on me; I'll come back to you if I feel like I'm going to get something out of it, otherwise I have nothing to act on with your suggestion. If I like it, please leave it up to me to make that determination. I don't need your help. No matter how many YouTube videos I may make, unless there is a promotions department that handles some of my business, you can assure that I will never say that in any of them.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment
