    Mispronounced Words: Tales of poor grammar

    Do you work with (or live with) someone who consistently uses double-negatives or pronounces words wrong?

    Usually it's pretty funny, sometimes annoying, and at times kind of embarassing.

    Anyways, if you have any good examples of words or stories share them. I've gone so far as to keep journals on some repeat offenders and like to go back and read some of them from time to time.

    Here are a few I can think of at the moment:

    - Pepperoni : pronounced "PAP-uh-roni"
    - Gatorade : pronounced "GAY-ner-ade" (WTF?!)
    - Headache: pronounced "HEH-dick"

    Another one... I used to work for an insurance agency and a lady came in to get a quote for her escalator. You know, the new and improved Cadillac Escalator? Oh, right...Escalade.

    I hate when people pronounce Oregon and Gonzaga as ORE-AH-GONE and GONE-ZAH-GAH.

      Many years ago in Junior High I had a Science teacher that pronounced Schedule, SHED SHOE UL. Drove me crazy.

          Oregon I understand, but isn't Gonzaga similar to that? http://www.gonzaga.edu/about/ataglance.asp

            I always disliked when people say the S on Illinois. The S is silent, but out of state people would always say Illi-noise.

              It's GonZAGa....hence the "zags" nickname they gave themselves....they aren't the "zogs".

                Reminds me of a Tosh.0 episode where the kid says "Illinoise" and Tosh asked him "Both of them?"

                  I'm surprised no one has mentioned "Wal Marts".

                  My grandmother can't pronounce Zaxbys. She says zack-a-bees.

                  I live in the South. Some people understand the right way to say things, but still pronounce them differently. I'm not perfect and I'm sure I have a strong southern dialect (the people on Battlefield could probably verify that), but I usually pronounce things the right way.

                  Examples of common mis pronounced words.

                  Oil = ull
                  Shower = Shire
                  Fire = Far

                  I struggle with the word literally if I stop and think about the way I'm saying it. I absolutely have to use the southern version "litrally". My mom said I struggled with the letter L when I was a little kid.

                  I also have a friend who can't pronounce aluminum.

                    I heard this a lot in Iowa. People pronounce the "s" at the end Des Moines. Another good one is Iowa being pronounced "EYE-o-way"

                    As a young pup I grew up in Missouri ("Mizz-ur-uh") but I have never had the impression that southern dialect was improper or a sign of poor word understanding. I actually enjoy the way some of those words you mentioned are pronounced (fire="far").

                    Although, hearing wash pronounced with an "r" as "warsh" makes me twitch a bit, or creek pronounced "crick".

                      Working in furniture, I can't say "Cull".

                      Actually, I struggle with a lot of -ull words... cull, skull, gull. They sound like coal, skoal, and goal. Guy @ work makes fun of me all the time b/c I'm a perfectionist on my job and can't pronounce these words. It gives him something to crack on me about.

                        What really annoys me is hearing people say "jag-wire" for jaguar. It doesn't make any sense.

                          This topic had me thinking. What is the correct pronunciation of Hyundai?

                          I've heard HUN DIE as well as HIGH UN DIE. Which is it?
