Re: Mispronounced Words: Tales of poor grammar

Not really a mispronunciation, but I watch the CBS show Person of Interest with my dad, and he always calls it "People of Interest". I understand that is technically correct since there are many in the show, but it's just so funny. Also at In-N-Out Burger, you can order a Double-Double, Animal Style (two meat/two cheese, and an addition of their sauce with other stuff). He mocks my love for it and for whatever reason calls it a Triple-Double, Monster Style.

As far as mispronunciations go, I hear a lot of things quite often, but they're more specific to certain people rather than a large group of people.

My son is 5 and he has speech delay and sees a speech pathologist through his school. He can communicate very well but some word sounds are more difficult and some formats are hard.

For instance, playing Lego Batman 2 he refers to Martian Manhunter as Martian hamhunter.

So help me god if someone was to criticize my son about his pronunciation/grammar like some on here are speaking about their dealings w/ people....hmm

Take a step back and realize that some people pronounce things a certain way because they are unable to do differently. It might be embarrassing, frustrating, what have you, but be thankful its not you.
As tempting as it might be, I don't seem recall anyone making fun of five-year-old children's speech impediments in this thread. It's mostly been about regional accents, dialects, adult people's poor grammar, etc.

According to my GF I can't pronounce the name Rachel well.

Sucks having a hearing impediment as i've been saying it the way I have all my life! She says I make it sound like "racial".

Unless you truly know the person (friend/family) then you do not know why they mispronounce something. All I am saying is be understanding of those who cannot help they way they sound/speak.

            Carry on...

Re: Mispronounced Words: Tales of poor grammar

An actual grammar annoyance: when people don't know the difference in accept and except. As in, I can actually ask which one means what and they don't know, not just typing the wrong word.

^ Like above, I was teaching area of polygons in a math class with units involved, so if we write down "80 ft^2," the students are actually saying "Eighty feet squared" as opposed to saying "Eighty square feet." They never stop, either.

I hate when people say Missouri as Missourah.

My wife drives me crazy by pronouncing crayons as crans.

As a mathematician, I'm going to say you are just nitpicking. Feet squared is perfectly fine. They are saying it as it is written and there isn't anything incorrect about it.
