Re: Mispronounced Words: Tales of poor grammar

I moved to Alabama when I was two, so as a kid, I developed a bit of a Southern accent, but only in certain words. Some that I still do from time to time even though I'm over a decade removed from the South is pronounce "stairs" as "stayers" and "night" as "naht".

The biggest one I have a problem with is February. For some reason, it kills me. Is the R silent, or not?

Or you could be like my dad who was born in wisconsin has lived the majority of his life in maryland, but the minute he steps on north carolina soil he talks like a cowboy in an old western.

Oh I forgot one of the pittsburghese terms that my wife uses all the time. She'll say something like "I need to go red up the room". Red = clean, have no idea where that comes from.

I remember many years ago on an episode of Family Feud with Richard Dawson (his original run as host). There was a family from Alabama with a very strong accent. The question was, "Name a food that starts with the letter A". They named a couple and then the next family member says, "I got this, Arnge! (orange). Richard Dawson just lost it.

          Dominant and dominate.

Go to any sports message board and you'll see people arguing over who was more "dominate" Wilt or Jordan, Gretzky or Lemieux, Grammar or illiteracy.

More than most of these, this is the one that drives me absolutely mental.

As Shaquille O'Neal left the Suns practice court, he yelled out, "Alvin's the coach. We must be the Clippers. And I must be Olowokandi. Nooooo!"

No offense to these people, but Canadian accents bug me. And it shouldn't.

This thread strikes a chord w/ me.

Its one thing to criticize people who mispronounce words because they choose to, or have a certain dialect, or are just uneducated/don't care... its another thing to criticize people who cannot pronounce words correctly because they have an inability to form the sound correctly.

My son is 5 and he has speech delay and sees a speech pathologist through his school. He can communicate very well but some word sounds are more difficult and some formats are hard.

For instance, playing Lego Batman 2 he refers to Martian Manhunter as Martian hamhunter.

So help me god if someone was to criticize my son about his pronunciation/grammar like some on here are speaking about their dealings w/ people....hmm

Take a step back and realize that some people pronounce things a certain way because they are unable to do differently. It might be embarrassing, frustrating, what have you, but be thankful its not you.

Yeah, I learned in my high school chemistry class that aluminium is actually the correct spelling, but somehow the 2nd 'i' got dropped in America so we call it aluminum.

My friend in college (he's from West Virginia) always gave me crap for that one.

My sister was living in Florida with her then boyfriend for a while and they were working in the same office area (was a telmarketing firm or what ever). One day my sister asked aloud if anyone had a gumband and her boyfriend and one other lady from Pittsburgh were the only ones who knew what she was talking about.

Well, cologne is actually spelled correctly even if it wasn't the correct word. Plus, I never really understood the meaning of (sic)

Easy slugger. No one to my knowledge is going around on this thread making fun of kids or general speech handicaps. I had to have speech therapy as kid myself, and still struggle with a few words from time to time. Hell, even some of the ones listed in here I am guilty of- some due to laziness others due to an actual mis-alignment of my jaw. No offense taken though.

But I understand where you're coming from.

There's a liquor store ad currently running every 15 minutes or so on the local R&B radio station where the girl who does the afternoon shift pronounces "Italian" as "EYE-talian"...

                                As in "Eye-tailian Muscato" (wine)...

You'd have thought the person who engineered the spot, the ad exec, the client...SOMEBODY would have cleaned that mess up before it hit the air...like, ALL day long...
