    Working in a hospital the most commonly mispronounced word that drives me up a wall is probably when someone comes in because they've been throwing up but they say they're there to be seen for vomikin instead of vomiting.

      There was a guy at my job who had recently moved up here from Southern Cal who thought the wind chill temperature was the "windshield temperature."

      They actually thought it meant the temperature of a car's windshield when it gets really cold.

        That reminds me, I have a book called "Medicalese A Humorous Medical Dictionary". Basically, it just gives humorous definitions and descriptions of various terms and personnel with associated with the medical profession. Anyways, one of the terms defined is "Patient Medicalese" which is basically common mispronunciations of medical terms by patients and there families. Some examples include.

        "De Beetles" = diabetes
        "Vomik" = vomit
        "Smiling mighty Jesus" = Spinal meningitis
        "Sick as hell crisis" = Sickle cell crisis"
        "High **** hernia" = Hiatal hernia (The asterisked word is your "planetary opening" as another OSer put it once. The esophageal hiatus is the opening in the diaphragm through which the esophagus passes.)
        "Massivie internal fart" = Myocardial infarction (heart attack)
        "Emeralds" = Hemorrhoids
        "Old-timers disease" = Altzheimers disease

        For the last one, I also have a few Medical bloopers page-a-day calendars and one of them included a blooper where a patient or family member mispronounced Altzheimers as "Anheuiser" as in Anheuiser Busch (which I'm probably spelling wronng).

          My HS woodshop teacher would tell us to "warsh (y)our hands in the gararge" and it always cracked me up.

          Brian Billick always says "Jerald Allen" instead of Jared Allen.

          Sometimes I struggle with the difference between affect and effect.

            I'll give you the major difference: affect is a verb.

                I've honestly been in situations where I'm typing to someone online, and then stop and google the difference between affect and effect, because I'm weird like that. The definitions really don't help, but your "verb" difference might be just the help I needed

                  So, I might have affected your effective sentence writing when distinguishing between the words affect and effect?

                  My cooking teacher used to pronounce "granulated sugar" weird. I don't even know how to write out how she said it, because it might not have necessarily sounded wrong, but it sure sounded strange.

                  I subbed an ELL class last week, and a student said "salmon" as it's spelled. It happens.

                    One thing that has always bugged me is how on Earth "colonel" can be pronounced "kernel". There's not even an "r" in "colonel"

                          It depends.

                          I know it the "urban" community, some pronounce it as MAR-RI-O. Never heard it said like the examples you used though.
