Re: Official OS BBQ/Grilling Thread
Well the first time cooking a steak wasn't too big of a failure. No meat market in my town, but a Kroger just opened so I at least beat out Wal Mart. Got the most expensive ribeye they had. Pan seared it. I don't like a lot of blood so I tried to get a medium. I think I had it perfect, but I didn't trust my gut and threw it back in. Came out medium well, but still edible. I need to perfect a lesser cut because these were about $16 a pound.Texas Rangers/Saints/LSU/Tottenham Hotspur

Re: Official OS BBQ/Grilling Thread
I remember when I was a kid in the late 80's we had a small town grocery where my dad would go get meat.
Kinda miss those days.

Re: Official OS BBQ/Grilling Thread
Saturday we are planning on breaking out the grill for the first time this year. My sister and niece are coming over.
Something real simple. Hot dogs and brats type stuff. But still, it's a celebration. I'll post plenty of pictures out of excitement.

Re: Official OS BBQ/Grilling Thread
I came into this thread looking for steak advice. Good timing.
When at the store what should I look for to know it's a quality steak? I'm wanting to try out cook something that is restaurant quality. Can you even get steaks that tender at big chain grocery stores? I'm trying to achieve fat that just melts like you would get on a $50 steak.
Try Albertsons(all choice cuts), Fiesta Lone star Meat(choice), Sprouts, Central market, Certified Angus from Tomb Thumb, or your local butcher.
I don't usually buy prime b/c its usually not worth the extra price. I never buy less of a grade than choice unless its certified tender like a rib roast such as ranchers reserve.
BTW Alberstsons and and some other stores have a penchant for mislabeling meat. If you know your cuts of meat you can get some great deals. I routinely buy Porterhouses and Filet for the price of chuck.
Happy grillin!Comment

Re: Official OS BBQ/Grilling Thread
I've been reading some of the articles on - http://www.seriouseats.com/2011/03/t...ct-steaks.html
One thing I took away from it is when to salt the steak. This particular site recommend either salting it right before you throw it on the pan/grill, or waiting at least 40 minutes after you have done it. No where in between.Comment

Re: Official OS BBQ/Grilling Thread
I'll typically wait at least 30 minutes if I'm seasoning/salting a piece of meat before I put it on the grill.
This is a priceless addition to the kitchen library:

Re: Official OS BBQ/Grilling Thread
Yes, at least every 2nd or 3rd trip to the store. I always check the meat prices even when I don't plan on buying or need any. Some stores even grind sirloin and label it as beef trimmings for a dollar a pound or less, just depends. I'm always looking for a great deal.Comment
