    Re: Official OS BBQ/Grilling Thread

Any input on propane grills that isn't "get a charcoal grill"? lol

Ours got damaged in a storm last fall and eventually i'll need to replace it. Honestly we don't want to get crazy in cost, so I'm probably looking at one of the Charbroil or Brinkmann types in the 150-250 range, but thought I'd at least ask you guys.

I know I'm cheap, but we mostly just use it for normal grilling, and with a family and whatnot we don't need to waste money on a fancier one just because. If I'm wasting money like that I'd rather get myself a 65" 4k tv lol

I would not skimp on the grill. Get a Weber. It will last 20 years or more. I bought a Weber stainless steel 6 burner gas grill with a rotisserie burner, smoker box and side burner. It was almost 10 years old when one of the crossover tubes rusted. (Crossover tubes are small tubes between burners that are used to light the other burners when firing up the grill).

I called Weber to inquire about buying a new crossover tube because I couldn't find them for sale on the net. He asked when I had bought the grill and I told him. He then informed me it was still under warranty and that he would ship out a new crossover tube ASAP. Three days later a get a box in the mail from Weber and to my surprise, it contained all the burner and crossover tubes for the grill. So my 10 year old grill was brand new on the inside.

I am not saying you need to buy a monster of a grill like I did but I would recommend a Weber to anyone, no matter what the size. I have 2 Weber Bullet Smokers, 2 Weber Q gas grills, a Weber Kettle and a little Smokey Joe. (Gave the monster away when I sold my house and it is still running strong for him 5 years later).

I'll see if I can get a Weber in the budget....not sure, but appreciate the input.

Def agree about the Weber. Their customer service is terrific as is their product. I have a gas Weber and a Weber Smokey Mountain. No issues with either.

As a matter of fact, my Weber propane grill is 9 years old, stays outside year round, on an uncovered deck, but I do put the canvas cover on when not in use.

My buddy is on his 3rd Charbroil in about the same time frame. Love my Webers, especially my Smoker.

Not only do I have a non functioning igniter (and shorter hair on one arm year round) but the bottom of my grill has warped/drooped from the heat.

Need to get a Weber, lol.

Edit: Heh, and just like that there's a 6-burner Weber Summit on a local FB sales group for $1k. OK, not ready for the Weber quite yet but deals like that need to stick around, lol.

I have never really used a cast iron skillet before, but did for Vday and put two seasoned thick ribeyes on the skillet and seared at 500 degrees then put in my grill with skillet and all. Best steaks I think I have ever done using this method.

Curious about grilling salmon on cedar planks?

Is it just as simple as seasoning the fish, laying it on the planks and closing the grill? No flipping required?

Also can you use a plank more than once?

Yes an yes, no flipping required, and yes you can use a plank more than once.....depending on the quality of the plank.

You will need to submerge the plank in water for a couple of hours before. This will bring out more "steam" from the planks and also prevent them from burning or "curling up".

Buy good planks, I bought some cheap ones on clearance at the grocery and they made everything taste like the inside of a pencil sharpener. Not good.

I've had my Weber Genesis for about 13 years. I grill everything on it. I even make the Christmas day Prime Rib on it. Grill batches of wings on it. Steaks, Fish, Vegetables. I even grill seasoned French bread on it and it gets a real nice smokey taste.

I probably use it 150 times a year. Best $450 I ever spent. Me and 5 other guys each got one at the same time, so they gave us a nice discount.

Don't scrimp on the grill. You get what you pay for.

I got a Big Green Egg for Christmas, anyone else have one? Love it so far. Holds temps much better than my Weber WSM.

My friend has one and they are awesome. I want one myself, but on the fence whether to drop the cash on it because I get so much use from the Webber.
