Re: Official OS Sports Card Collecting Thread

Nice pick. I always have cardboard connection up on my tablet when I'm pulling stuff from packs.

I'm in on a case break of National Treasures that goes this afternoon (I have 4 teams. Brewers, Mets, Royals and Mariners - so not the greatest, but could be worse.) I'll let you guys know if anything decent comes out of it.

They're raffling away 2 hobby boxes at the end (choose from 2011 Panini Limited, 2010 Bowman Chrome or 2010 Topps Chrome) for the teams that go hitless. I wouldn't be mad if I got a card and a box.

Annnnnnd I'll consider it a success. I only had 4 teams (One guy had 12, he cleaned up quite a bit. Other guy had 6, one with 5, me with 4, and 3 people had 1 team.)

      Here's the video.

      <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/KyX_IxB2FM0?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

And a recap of what I got from the break.

How does being "in on a case break" work with getting certain teams? I've been out of collecting for 20 years essentially, so just wondering how this works...

You guys make me want to buy a box and relive my childhood lol

Just like the video I posted above. There's different types of breaks (30 people where the teams are randomized via computer, 30 people where it's first come first serve buying the team you want, certain # of people where they pull all the cards and it's a snake style draft, etc.)

Instead of paying 1200-2000+ for a case (or cases) you pay a much smaller amount for teams in that so the cost is spread out over multiple people - like the video above of the break I was in.

Just a quick edit: The problem with National Treasures is the MLB license. I didn't end up getting the Paige card - they're giving it to the guy that got the A's since he played for the Kansas City Athletics - not much I can do about that. I got a free spot for the Royals in the next box break so it could be worse. Happy with their service.

            So my box game in.

The auto in the box was this

I was hoping to get lucky and nab an Almora, but I didnt and as such I'm on the hunt for another box.

I did land an Aoki, JS.

You bastards made me purchase a small box over the weekend.

It was a 2012 Topps Series 2. $9.99 from Target which felt like a steal.

Pulled a Shin Soo Choo jersey card. That was pretty much it as far as valuable cards.

My son was born 3 months ago and I'm tempted to start a collection for him to have as he gets older. I collected when I was younger, so I wouldn't mind getting back into as well. This thread should help.

Looks like this thread got me back into collecting, bought this today off eBay, only $12, where most others from this year are around $30.

Re: Official OS Sports Card Collecting Thread

I'd gone through and cataloged all of my cards some years ago putting them in order by year, brand, and number and entering them in an excel spreadsheet. Ended up with somewhere in the area 7400 baseball cards and 3500 football cards (that's not including multiple copies of cards) along with a few (less than 100 each) basketball and hockey cards. Looked up the baseball and football cards in a price guide books I'd bought off amazon probably around 2005. Of course it didn't have a lot of the more obscure brands and subsets and metasets and whatnot that I have.

This thread has inspired me to go back through the spreadsheets and reprice the cards using freebaseballcardspriceguides.com . The site says that the values are approximate street value and the main thing I notice about it's prices that differs from more conventional paper price guides is that the majority of cards are in the $.20 - $.30 value range rather than common/not listed cards in the paper guides being in the $.03 - $.05 cent range. Anyways, I've gotten through 31 of my baseball card sets ranging in size from a few sets where I only have one card to 545 unique cards in a near complete 1988 Donruss box set. Problem is, there really is no indication of if that site is still being actively updated and it seems to be down at the moment. Anybody else know of a good site with free online price guides?

So I called my local card store to see how much one of their hobby boxes was, and they're charging $100. I've seen them go for like $55 or so sealed on eBay. Is there any other, more reputable, place I could look online?

Yup that's where I went. Actually where I pulled my Trout from, so I know they don't search the boxes and sell the crap ones. Highly recommended, shipping to me took... from like a Friday-Wednesday so not too bad. 3-5 business days I think is their normal turnaround.
