Re: Official OS Sports Card Collecting Thread
I'm diversifying a bit. Part of me is looking at cards as an investment and part of me is looking for enjoyment, so I will be doing a bit of both.
For instance, Aoki is one of my favorite players in the majors and I've made it a goal of mine to have a nice collection of his by years end.
Probably not making money on this, but having fun at leastComment

Re: Official OS Sports Card Collecting Thread
Modern cards these days are so mass produced now that they have pretty much no value to them. It's a shame. The cards that will bring you the most money are cards pre 1950's.
I have a 1993 Derek Jeter rookie card that I would be lucky to get $20 for. I would never sell it, but just saying as an example. These days it's more for the collecting and fun of it rather than selling for the average person.Comment

Re: Official OS Sports Card Collecting Thread
You would think that when we are all in our late 40's or 50's some of these cards from the 80's and early 90's might have some value. You gotta figure a lot of those cards will get lost over the years and there won't be as many available. Man I can remember when our local mall would have card/memorabilia shows, they used to have the dates for those shows in the backs of the Beckett magazines. Good times.Battle.net: xXKING08Xx

Re: Official OS Sports Card Collecting Thread
Picked up some of the new Heritage cards yesterday, and I'm really impressed with them. I've heard lots of complaints about the close up head shots used on the cards, but I like the 1964 design.
Short prints are supposed to be falling in one of every three packs this year with Heritage, but I ended up pulling 6. I had two blasters (8 packs per) and a rack pack. So, I guess I was kind of lucky. Unfortunately, I didn't get the Harper/Trout.
I really got back into collecting cards last year, and this is probably my favorite card in my collection:
Nothing like the Trout auto that I saw earlier in here, and I'm extremely jealous by the way.
I have focused on collecting Cubs cards primarily, and not so much of the set building. I'm definitely going to try and piece the new Heritage set together though.Comment

Re: Official OS Sports Card Collecting Thread
Man, this thread is giving me the itch again to get back into sports cards. I became extremely burned out on the rising cost of boxes/packs and the chase for nothing but auto's and patch cards, its like most cards outside of those werent worth a thing. I remember pulling a Chris Paul auto 5 years ago or so and the thing was only valued at around $20 and that was the highlight of the box, a box that cost me somewhere near $70.00 to buy. There is nothing like sitting down with a new hobby box and popping it, I dont know what it is but there is nothing else that gets me as excited as it.Comment

Re: Official OS Sports Card Collecting Thread
It's been a while since I have collected personally, but my younger brothers still do quite a bit. I've got a ton of older cards from the 80s (grew up in the 90s... so I don't understand how that happened.), 90s and the early 2000s. Unfortunately, when I was younger I didn't take that great of care of them. I remember I've got a Joe Mauer RC that's in poor shape simply because I didn't take care of it... Oh well. My middle brother does a better job of that, though. He has been getting into strange older cards (for instance, he's got this old R.C Stevens card from the late 50s [comc isn't loading for me right now, otherwise I'd link the page.], not sure how that happens) and they collect the newer packs as well. Good to see that I rubbed off on them.
EDIT: This is the Stevens card I was talking about. http://www.comc.com/Cards/Baseball/1...tevens/1808637Last edited by mb625; 03-08-2013, 12:01 AM.MLB: Minnesota Twins

Re: Official OS Sports Card Collecting Thread
I haven't collected in about 3 or 4 years but here are some of my all-time favorite pieces that I'll most likely keep forever.
Spoiler
This is most likely my all-time favorite card, Felix Potvin is my all-time favorite hockey player. It was ridiculously expensive seeing as I was 14 or 15, it was a special gift from my Mom and Dad. I don't need to describe this too much as I feel that the image speaks for itself.
Spoiler
Here's some other Felix Potvin cards. The Journey Jersey was a throw in with the Journey Emblem seen above since they screwed up and sent that one first instead, the dual jersey with CuJo and SPX Winning Materials were deals I brokered and got a great deal on from being friends with the guy who ran my local Field of Dreams and the UD MVP Super Script was an eBay steal.
Spoiler
This was another eBay steal and was my first Logoman card. Not a true 1 of 1 Logoman since they didn't do those when this was made but it's special to me. It being Kareem makes it even better.
Spoiler
This is probably one of the last super high-end cards I bought, it's an Elgin Baylor Letterman card autograph. I loved this set so much but for not being game worn the prices they commanded at the time were ridiculous.
Spoiler
These are 3 Charlie Scott Letterman cards from the same set as the Elgin above. I was trying to put together his entire name but the NBA license ended up going strictly to Panini and I lost interest in collecting before I could finish it.
Spoiler
These were mostly card show pick-ups, except for Walton and Cowens (eBay). They had a huge show at Sawgrass Mall and I got a great deal on some of the rookies of my favorite players in NBA history.
Spoiler
I hate Duke but love Christian Laettner. Isn't that weird? Anyways the Greats of The Game Player of The Year auto took me forever to find. At the time the 2 GOTG autos were Laettner's only signature cards, now I think he has a ton through Panini and I think UD did a college series or something. The bottom is a printing plate I miraculously pulled from a box of Topps Total.
Spoiler
I also love Patrick Ewing. When I was collecting most of his memorabilia cards were crazy expensive. Probably my 2nd favorite card I own is the Star team set baggy with Patrick's rookie card, it was a gift from my Mom and that set means the world to me.
I trolled eBay for a better picture
Spoiler
I used to collect the crap out of Chris Webber, I ended up with a lot of great cards but this is probably my 2nd favorite of the bunch. Flair Final Edition game worn jersey patch with a piece of the jock tag from his jersey.
Spoiler
My absolute favorite Chris Webber card. Chris Webber logoman card. This was probably the most expensive card I ever bought I think it was like $400 or something, I bought it using money I made selling wrestling dvds.
Spoiler
This is in the tier with the Potvin Journey Emblem and the Patrick Ewing Star set. This was a gift from my Dad when I was 13 or 14 and is really special to me. This card had been sitting at Field of Dreams forever, being South Florida this wasn't going to fly off the shelves too fast since it was a high priced hockey card. My dad got the owner down to about $100 or $125 from $200 because I was the only person who ever went in that store and yearned for it. I remember this day perfectly. It was great.
A lot of my cards have sentimental value to me. Either I remember the story of how I got them or they were a gift from my Mom or my Dad. Some cards I have that aren't pictured are every bit as important to me as those that are, like a basic Be A Player Signature Series Felix Potvin auto my Dad surprised me with when I was 14. For some inexplicable reason the Panthers/Kings game was sold out and I wouldn't get to see Potvin play so he picked it up from Field of Dreams to surprise me. Going through my shoe boxes of cards bring back such great memories to me, it's one of the few perks of having a great memory, you tend to remember the circumstances and stories behind stuff like little pieces of cardboard.
Screw it here's a picture of the Felix Potvin BAP Signature Series auto, it's too important to me to leave it off
Spoiler
Image from checkoutmycards.com, I'll have to get an actual image of mine at some point.
I'll have to dig through my shoe boxes at some point and share with you guys a longer post with more stuff.Last edited by Taur3asi3; 03-08-2013, 02:34 AM.As Shaquille O'Neal left the Suns practice court, he yelled out, "Alvin's the coach. Nice collection Taur. I'm not into sports cards other than baseball, but those are nice.
The stories behind them make it even more so.
Also dig the Clemente. I like older cards because most of them don't feel so... Busy.
Also, Mo - what did you end up picking up from comc? Just a variety of players?
Edit: oh, and for those with baseball cards... I have the single sports subscription for Beckett so I can look stuff up for you if need be.badComment
