Re: Official OS Sports Card Collecting Thread
2017 was when I got back into dabbling chasing the Judge rookie. His card cooled off as the chase turned to Otani, Tatis, Guerrero, etc, and gobbling up his cards on the low was possible. This is the long game fun of this hobby: projecting. The thought I had was how pricey it can be to start the chase afterward, but it can be fun too.Last edited by Hammerhunker; 08-05-2022, 10:19 AM.Comment

This hobby is fun, but for investing purposes, it's not the best imo. I've come to a point where I just collect for fun. I buy who I like and think may be good if they are affordable. Right now I'm buying Andres Gimenez and Josh Naylor. Got Naylor's Topps Chrome rookie auto refractor for $7, and a Gimenez Finest rookie green shimmer /99 auto for $18. Both those guys cards are going up. I also like to rip so I buy boxes when I can and I get what I get and I'm happy with it. I used to get mad if I didn't get a good hit out of say a $150-200 box, but now I'm just like well that's a beautiful card even though it's a nice looking Mitch Keller auto.
I would also recommend buying on Paul Goldschmidt, and Albert Pujols. They don't get much love in the hobby, but Pujols' cards are gonna go up when he goes into the hall, and Goldschmidt cards I think are gonna keep going up slowly because he has a shot at the HOF if he keeps up his current trajectory.Last edited by PVarck31; 08-05-2022, 04:55 PM.Comment

Re: Official OS Sports Card Collecting Thread
This is why I like prospects. Bowman has always been my favorite set and always keep all my 1st Bowman cards because you never know. I buy guys here and there. But the issue is now, everyone is moving into prospecting, so finding some of the higher projected talent is a lot more expensive than it used to be. So much so, that probably 95% of these guys' cards aren't gonna be worth the cardboard they are printed on in two years.

My joy in collecting really is completing vintage sets. My favorite was completing the '74 Topps baseball set that was around 75% pulled by the 6 year old me. Not a mint collection by any means, but chalked full of memories.Comment

Re: Official OS Sports Card Collecting Thread
My son and I have a cardbox where we put all rookie and project cards, whether it be Bowmans or the regular series cards. Now the fun is going through the box and [B]discovering[B]those that made it, sort of speak. We don't rip packs to make money, we do it for the joy of discovery and the what ifs.

When I got back up there for a vacation I looked through those cards. And yep there it was and it wasn't just a base. It was a rc refractor of /499. I was pretty floored. I don't know how I overlooked it the first time. Acuna was obviously a major prospect. I immediately put that thing in a protector.
One of those rare times where negligence turned out to be fun.[emoji23]

Re: Official OS Sports Card Collecting Thread
So this is a big problem. Fake autos. Topps has admitted it as well. Obviously signed by the same person, and neither auto looks anything like the actual auto looks from the players.
Can you imagine paying $2,000 a box and you get this?
Here's the link of the video where this is discussed. https://youtu.be/u775D_7UW78
Hey PJ, have you or anyone else noticed some people are taking autographed cards, specifically from the 90's, and trying to find a similar colored marker to add in fake numbers like "3/25" when you know damn well those cards were not hand numbered? I have caught this on eBay a few times, and although I never checked the sale results, or if they did, I imagine a few people have been tricked into buying a $25-30 card for over a 100 because they thought it was a SP. Not only that, but it ruins a good card otherwise. Lots of creeps in this hobby. Especially the ones who weigh packs, or the "pack perverts" who damage cards by feeling them for thickness.
Anyway, I still love collecting though. I'll post some of mine on here later when I can take pics. Just noticed the thread again so I want to scroll through, as I always enjoy seeing what everyone has.I post the frog

Love that set, so many great Rookies. Maddux too, and I think even Will Clark, no? Very iconic, and the Bo Jackson FS card should be a must have for everyone. Nice buy my dude!

Oh man Frank Thomas was my favorite player with Ken Griffey Jr. growing up. Would love to have pulled that!

Frank Thomas is a good dude too. I loved his interview during the Field of Dreams game. A former player spending his time supporting the great game of baseball.Comment

And yes, I actually recently noticed this. I hope people would realize this is fake, but some fall for it. And that's not because they are dumb or anything, I think it's more people put too much trust into sellers.
There has also been a lot of controversy with breakers lately too. Stealing cards, slight of hand tricks. But that is pretty rare. I do think most breakers are honest. But it gives the honest ones a bad name.
As far as pack searching, yep, happens all the time. A few years ago, I saw a guy at Target sitting in front of the cards with a scale weighing packs and not even trying to hide it. I told the manager what he was doing and he said they couldn't do anything about it.
There are definitely a lot of slimeballs in the hobby, but definitely more honest and reputable people. I've never had any issues buying cards off eBay. It seems like there is sort of an unspoken card community on there that tend to be honest and fair.Comment

For sure dude, quite a while actually. That story about the guy with a scale in Target shocks me, but doesn't surprise me, but still kind of surprises me. That's a pretty ballsy move to just sit there in the open and set up shop, but like you said, as the hobby has went from, you know, a hobby, to a way of life for some, it has brought in a whole new crowd. Long gone are the days, circa 1996 for example, that you could walk into a retail store with a $20 and pick between 5-8 different brands for a good sized box and get some nice hits. Now every decent box, meaning mostly Panini and some Chrome, is multiple hundreds if you want Hobby. It's bonkers man. I watched a Youtube video where people have been weighing Panini National packs and just laying the boards to the guys buying them for $50 a pop (for 1-2 cards) on Ebay and taking a big loss for it. Apparently they can even tell which cards are autographed now.
It's a real shame younger collectors can't experience what we did, as it was so much more pure back then. I like how the good ones left are kind of policing all of the new trends and schemes these people are coming up with, as it at least informs the people who do their homework before shelling out the big money required to enjoy it now.
What's your biggest hit or favorite card would you say man? I still haven't taken the time to upload any of mine yet but like I said earlier, I love seeing everyone else's collections.

Re: Official OS Sports Card Collecting Thread
Yeah, the national pack thing was a mess. Still don't know if that was a scam or not.
As far as the best cards I've pulled, best would probably be a 1st Bowman auto of Vladdy Jr /150 out of a blaster. I wont even tell you how embarrassingly low I sold it for. Biggest regret in the hobby for me.
Then pulled another Vladdy Jr out of Select a few years ago. Also a Bo Bichette RC auto /99 from Finest.
Other than that, I've hit a few good ones here and there.
What about you?Comment

Re: Official OS Sports Card Collecting Thread
Here a few of my favorites from each sport. I collect Griffey and Jordan heavily, but have been getting a lot more into Ripken and Piazza, but always dabble in other areas as well. Like Bonds and McGwire a lot, Puckett (if I can afford him believe it or not) and random patches I find nice. I also have some pretty sick vintage baseball, like a 1954 Mantle.
This is one my favorite Griffey's, always thought it was one of the nicer designs -
1996 Ultra Thunderclap Ken Griffey Jr.
Here is one of my favorite football cards from a very special season, the Randy Moss RC and 1998, when the Vikes went 15-1 and almost made the Super Bowl. Also was Barry Sanders last year I believe.
National Treasures G/U Triple Patch Barry Sanders/Randy Moss/Steve Young /25
And this is my 2nd most valuable, at least sentimentally, card. I know I've told this story on the net before, but it means a lot to me. I swear on my life this is a true story.
Spoiler
It was in the summer of 1997, Bismarck ND. My brother, my two cousins, and I were all going down to the Kirkwood mall on a nice, beautiful summer day. Life was good, I was only 12 years old, and my dad had just given my brother and I $10! That was a lot for us back then, especially for our family. We weren't dirt poor, but hey, $10 in 1997 was next level and not normal.
Anyway, we get to the mall and I go straight to the card shop, Northern League. I had rarely ever been able to buy hobby packs or more expensive cards because I was either limited to cash or retail when we came up to the "city" and had to pick from the less expensive brands. That day however, was different. I grabbed a pack of 1997 SPX Baseball for $6.99. I could not believe the insanity, $7 for a pack of cards, containing only 3 of them no less!
I open the pack and oh. my. God. The 2nd card was a golf foil (my first ever serial numbered card, /5000) Mike Piazza Bound for Glory insert. I did not know what it was worth, but to me at that moment it was priceless. He looked like my dad, played catcher like I did, and hit bombs, like I (sometimes) did. I was in Heaven.
Then I remember I had almost $3 left. I approach a box of Skybox Z-Force on the counter, 2 packs left. I carefully view them like as if I know what I'm doing before selecting one and going to pay. Just as I am ready to hand my money over I say "WAIT!" and go grab the other pack, putting mine in its place.
I pay, the guy behind the counter grabs the pack I had, and I start ripping through the pack. Nothing. Okay. no big deal, still pumped over the day I had at the card shop. Then I see it. I see the guy going through the pack and stopping. His eyes... His eyes just... He just went blank. My stomach sank immediately, as even at 12 years old I knew I made a mistake. I mustered "W....What is it?"
And the card below is what he showed me. My day was now ruined, and a little part of me died in the hobby after that. I had it in my hands guys. I had that pack ready to pay...
After 24 years of waiting, last summer I finally purchased the card, in the best shape I could find (maybe even overpaid a little, but whatever, this was my unicorn) and I reunited with this beauty. I know it sounds lame, but a part of me felt at peace.
Here she is, in all its glory:
1997-98 Skybox Z-Force Quickstrike Michael Jordan
Please share your collections and stories if you will, I have so many myself.Last edited by baumy300; 08-28-2022, 11:27 PM.I post the frog

Oof... I understand man, I always am cautious if I sell a baseball prospect because the guy can be meh from 22 on until 25 or 26 and then just explode. Don't beat yourself up too much my dude, we have all made those mistakes but we also have all gotten some steals as well. It's all a gamble in that sense!
I am 99.9% a collector though, and my post above is just a few that come to mind. I could go on for days I feel like, and I probably will post some others, but the ones above should be a nice start. I have my eyes set on a few cards I really, really want, but they are spendy AF and I may have to slow down since I'm saving for a house. But yeah dude, the Bichette card will always bring a premium being numbered that low and being a Finest RC parallel auto to top it off. You thinking about getting it graded? I know trying to go PSA, or even Beckett now is a tough gig if you're a pleb in the game like me.
PS: I'm pretty sure the pack scam was legit. Watch the first video, then the 2nd, and then tell me what you think. I mean, at what point is it no longer a coincidence lol? Not trying to be a downer either, but I don't want to see anyone get ripped off. That's not cool.
