Meh, when you're surrounded by a weak and friendly neighbor to the north (Canada), a weak and friendly neighbor to the south (Mexico), fish to the east, more fish to the west, and have protecting you the most powerful military in the history of the world, you tend to worry about the little things.

The world is arguably as safe as it has ever been in terms of geopolitics, with the probability of war between the major powers at the lowest level ever. Of course, given our power and our geography, America is safer than almost anyone out there. Which, again, gives us time to hand-wring about minor terrorist attacks and militarily intervene literally everywhere.

Pretty much the entire point of terrorism is to make you feel that "you're not safe anywhere."

I don't understand the notion that we are not safe anymore. There is no need for this feeling. Violent rime rates are as low as they were in the late 1960s and violent crime has sharply decreased since their peak in the late 1980s.

The reality is that as terrible as this was, it killed three people and injured a few dozen. It is bad, but it shouldn't make your average Joe living in Middle-town American feel unsafe. This many people are probably murdered on a nightly basis in Chicago.

EDIT: If Wikipedia can be believed, there were 506 murders in Chicago (I assume just the city) in 2012, so that's about 1.4 murders per night. It was much higher in the early 1990s, with 931 murders per year, and in 1974 with 970!

Its knee jerk reactions, social media, everything is connected so we see more of the bad then we did just 15 years ago. Makes it seem like things are worse.

Although, 9/11 did change our perceptions forever. So its understandable in a lot of cases why people feel that way. Something that we never even could have dreamed of happening did. So that sticks with people. I know it does me.

Sadly, for them it's pretty much par for the course.

The good news is they threaten to show up places a lot more than they actually go through with it. I know they threatened to show up in Newtown.

If they protest the 8 year old's funeral in Dorchester (you know, that place that Affleck has made famous in Gone Baby Gone and The Town full of real Boston people), it will be a massacre. They will need riot police, swAt, whatever, to separate them. Boston people, after something like this, will NOT let them get anywhere close. They won't care about any repercussions, they will attack without care.

I heard they played Sweet Caroline during the Yankee game in the Bronx tonight; a Boston Red Sox tradition. I heard they also did it in Cleveland. I saw a video and it was surreal seeing the NY crowd singing along.

With the Westboro people, some of them are easily scared. They didn't even make it out of their cars at the JoePa Funeral. They cancelled it once they got there because they seen what they were getting into.
