Yeah, it was kind of embarrassing, to be honest. They killed four, injured hundreds, and managed to shut down one of the biggest cities in the US for a full day.

Re: Terrorist Attack at the Boston Marathon

I just got back from the Phillies game and was reading through this thread. I was a little surprised to say the least to see the phrase " Sadly there hasn't been a hanging since...". Obviously I'm happy they caught him but I don't feel like its a celebration. I would prefer they give him life in prison and make him think about everything for however long he lives. But if he gets the death penalty, I would prefer they don't publicize the matter and in his group of people he becomes a martyr.

Since I obviously missed all of the coverage during the capture. I was wondering how were people able to hear the scanners? If it violates the TOS, you can just pm the response if you want since I don't understand how this works.

My thoughts exactly. I'm afraid these two, while taken down swiftly, may have made others think that America is vulnerable. Hoping for no copycats.

The precedent for shutting down a city for a day is a scary one, IMO. I just hope it doesn't give other would-be terrorists ideas...

Internet streams. There are a ton of police/fire scanner streams on the internet these days.

For instance, here's one for my area.

Don't worry, it did. To be fair though, the Mumbai incident dwarfs this situation so comparatively speaking it could have been worse.

Regardless of how embarrassing it is to the country and how vulnerable it makes us look, I admire the Boston Police Department and the FBI for their work. Not only did they determine who detonated the bombs, but they tracked them down, eliminated one, and captured the other for interrogation. Great work.

Re: Terrorist Attack at the Boston Marathon

I don't consider it embarrassing at all.

When this happens in other parts of the world, the bombers are often never found unless they were suicide bombers. In less than a work week, we found them, killed one and captured the other. And we did it with nothing to go on other than video and photos from the marathon.

Sure, we shut down a major city for a whole day. To me, that just shows we're going to do what it takes to get you. I think the FBI, Boston police and Massachusetts police did a hell of a job.

Great points that I hadn't thought of. And I agree, our law enforcement did a hell of a job.

Glad they finally caught the guy.

Pitt students did a 5 mile walk around the Cathedral of Learning this afternoon as a show of solidarity with Boston College students who were supposed to stage a walk from their campus to the marathon finish line area (~5 miles) today though the BC walk was cancelled due to the citywide lockdown.

It really goes to show the lengths that will be taken to get the job done. It's not like "we didn't get them today, lets try again tomorrow" type of mindset, its "we're not sleeping till this is done with"(did they actually find him before the shift change?).

And like you said, all of this just based off of videos(none were high quality were they?) and pics of marathon(including the most iconic pic of this whole thing which basically confirmed the guy with the backpack near the kid).

They also did all this without any hostages or anything like that. Wasn't that a big reason why they were going slow from Thursday to Friday? To make sure no innocent people would be around/in the way.

And it shows that if something needs to be done, the city will co-operate with it, even if it means not being able to leave their houses. We didn't get riots of people complaining about being forced into their houses or anything, everyone knew what had to be done
