Re: Oklahoma Tornado Outbreak
Heard on the radio today that a lot of people don't have basements down there. How is that possible in such an active area of the country (as far as severe weather goes)???
Something with the land that doesn't allow basements to be dug?University of Minnesota Golden Gopher Hockey

Re: Oklahoma Tornado Outbreak
The average storm shelter can be as much as $10,000.
When I lived in Norman, OK the house we rented out in college already had an underground concrete shelter in the backyard which was a nice thing to have but unfortunately not everyone can have one.***My Teams***

A lot of the terrain is rock solid in the area. It can be pretty expensive to just dig through the rock and clay.

To put it in perspective Moore has 3 high schools. I think 5 middle schools and 23 elementary schools. Just to put 1 little shelter is 10,000. Now try to imagine something that can fit all the kids from all the schools and how much that would cost. Now you have 31 schools to put that in. You would have to put it in all the schools because as it was shown earlier, you had 15 minutes to get to shelter from this storm. There is no way you could get all your kids from 1 school to another and into the shelter in 15 minutes.
I also want to point out that residents in the towns who don't have storm shelters usually go schools in these situations. I know my high school was designated as a shelter in my town. So you would have to account for more than just students and faculty.
In addition I also know that a lot of the schools are designed with tornadoes in mind. We had a building where there were classrooms on the inner part and circled around and then classrooms on the outer part that also circled around. The inner classrooms had reinforced walls to help protect against storms but when you get a storm like this there is only so much that can help you against.
Keep in mind also that why it seems these are very common, big storms that are catastrophic like this are not very common.
Ready to spin a captivating essay on tornadoes? Then check out this article for all the essentials and interesting facts on this phenomenon.
Here is a cool site I found. That has all tornado history from 1951 to April of 2012. Cleveland county is where Moore is since 1951 there have been only 67 tornadoes in Cleveland county. Only 50 total fatalities in 61 years. Now that total will goes because of this last storm but that is still not that many.
Canadian county is where I am from, we have actually had more tornadoes than Cleveland, as we have had 89, but only 11 people have died. Due to the fact that it is less dense and the storms haven't been as severe.
I think the thing that bothers me the most is the fact that people who don't know storms and haven't lived in Oklahoma are freaking out and trying to push for regulations that are absurd when they don't know what they are talking about. Those of us in Oklahoma have lived there for awhile, we know how to handle these situations. We are very proficient at it and have done a damn well job. We don't need any outsiders trying to force us to do stuff that isn't necessary or practical.Comment

Re: Oklahoma Tornado Outbreak
Like I said earlier though I think it is impractical to get storm shelters into all of these schools. I am fine with being proven wrong on that but there are 23 schools in this one part of the metro area and that is a big cost and execution problem. This is a complex problem that isn't as easy as saying build a giant storm shelter or giant basement. That also grinds my gears. Like I said I think the above ground storm rooms in the middle of a school are the best idea.Comment

Re: Oklahoma Tornado Outbreak
My friend that I have been referencing worked at Oakridge Elementary school. Here is a video of the twister barely missing her school.

Re: Oklahoma Tornado Outbreak
That guy has balls of steel. I hope he was a professional storm chaser. I heard that distinct tornado noise during the video that I remember hearing when I had my close call. I would of bailed way before him if I was shooting that video. To the point where I could see debris flying around me. It was time to leave then.Comment
