Most token booths have a map on it.
Token booth clerks will also help you out(but will mumble and be very disinterested)
There are usually maps on the platform level as well.....
    When all else fails....ASK someone!
    New Yorkers are helpful(not a joke )

I appreciate the knowledge on the subway. We're staying near Times Square and trying to figure out where to go tomorrow. Anyone have a rundown on places to avoid? We're interested in Brooklyn, for starters. Just trying to piece it all together on the fly.

What are you trying to do? Brooklyn's great but imo isn't somewhere to just walk around mindlessly. For that Time Square is perfect... next would be Central Park, area by Statue of Liberty. You could head to Wall Street and check out ground zero.

Plenty of great places to eat, drink, shop, etc. though and I'd prefer Brooklyn to Manhattan (or probably any area) for that. But you may want to get an idea of exactly where you want to go first.

Last few times I've been back to NY(was there this past weekend actually)I've driven there and haven't had too much issue finding parking. Had to pay for it but it's like $30-$40 bucks to leave it there.

Of course, driving was the only option because of the amount of places I was going and some spots the train doesn't go to. Brooklyn's fine but it also depends where you're at in Brooklyn.

If your trying to do the tourist thing, check out Ellis Island/Statue of Liberty. You can get tickets which includes both spots for like $18.

I heard about this pub named McClarens. Apparently a lot of stuff happens there.

(As a place to go, not avoid)

Nice, thank you. Our hotel is near Times Square so we've kinda been in that by default. We walked Central Park today and played a little basketball in Harlem. I'm thinking Wall Street and ground zero would be a nice place to visit next.

Nice! You can just walk by ground zero and check it out. If you want to actually check out the memorial I'd recommend going online and getting tickets. I don't know how it is during the week but it can be a looooong wait on the weekends, if you can get in at all.

You could take the train there, chill for a bit, then keep heading down to Brooklyn to eat/drink.

You pretty much nailed it. We took the train down to The Cage this morning just to give it a look (much smaller than I thought it'd be). Then we hoofed it to the memorial in lower Manhattan. We went the free route (though we donated) and thankfully the wait was very manageable (15-20 minutes).

From there, we actually hiked across the Brooklyn Bridge, walked along the shore and looked to stop at a recommended ice cream spot (Ample Hills Creamery) only to realize they don't open until Saturday. So then we subbed it up down to Coney Island, got some pizza, and circled back around to catch the Stanten Island Ferry.

I feel like I'm in pretty solid shape, but I admit I am quite worn from the overabundance of walking we've done over the past 48 hours. Great times though. Pretty cool to be able to experience NY and get a feel for the manner with which the city operates. It's nice to put a frame of reference to all things New York I see in media and otherwise. And again, I appreciate all the help you (and others) were able to provide. Clutch stuff.

The NYC subway system is very convoluted. It's not bad once you get used to it, but it's by far the worst metro system that I've ever been on as far as understanding. I got a hang of the Parisian metro system very quickly and I don't even read French. NYC's was a mess until it finally clicked for me. I've been on D.C.'s, Philly's, London's, Madrid's, Porto's, Lisbon's, Paris', Rome's, and Santiago's and all of those were easy to figure out. I'm kind of a metro fan for some reason. They're kind of fun.

The NYC subway system isnt bad at all. I avoid it like the plague; but if you go in knowing exactly what routes you need, you're fine.

I mean, it's usable, but I do think it's the worst metro system I've ever been on. Once you get used to it, it's fine, but it isn't the most efficient design, for sure. Then again, it was built a hundred years ago, so that's not too much of a surprise as it's quite a hodgepodge.

It's pretty dirty, too, compared to most metro systems.

EDIT: Actually, Philly's metro system, while easy to use, was a real mess. I felt like I was going to get stabbed in some of those stations.

What's protocol and extremely crowded subway cars? We were caught off guard with one on our second day. The doors close so quickly that we felt we had to go inside the doorway closest to us, which was jam packed, standing room only.

Adding to it, and I'm guessing this is just everyday New York stuff, but I wasn't used to standing, so when the train began my weight shifted a little bit. Then a woman behind me, in a vaguely Caribbean accent said, "Excuse me. I am standing here and you are bumping into me. You need to stop doing that" - or something to that effect. It came off as if she believed I was hitting her on purpose, though I didn't even feel contact in the first place. Then a guy standing next to me muttered annoyingly, "It's a moving train...." which created a separate back-and-forth between those two, with me in the middle. It was all a little crazy for an outsider like me.

Things escalate quickly in NYC, no?

                              LOL.

Ahh, the joys of the subway. I've seen some hilarious encounters because of someone accidentally bumping into another person more than once. I don't get it. It's not a big deal...it happens.
