If we're talking bar fights, then a weapon is definitely cowardly. I think you have to expect the possibility of a fight in a bar and if you're a mean drunk then stay away. I made it a policy to never mouth off in bars because you just don't know who you're dealing with. And the point was to have fun and meet girls.

Re: I Need To Learn How To Fight!!!
Anyway, my apologies for being a bad influence. I was thinking from the viewpoint of my world, not high school or college. And from the stuff we were taught in the army in a bad situation. We were told size does matter, don't toy around with a huge dude, find a weapon. But that's a different situation than I think what people are talking about here. Sorry about that.Comment

Re: I Need To Learn How To Fight!!!
No, I didn't. And just because you (or anybody else) did doesn't mean anything. The H2H you are taught in the military is meaningless if a 225 lb. man lands a haymaker to your face with the first punch of a fight. It's game over at that point no matter who you are. I know firsthand.
And this whole topic has nothing to do with defending your family/home/property, it is about random altercations and defending yourself. At your age the likelihood of you having to worry about these things are extremely low, but the TC is much younger than we are and goes out to bars/clubs with his friends. People in that age group are much more likely to end up in a physical altercation than you and I are so their approach to these things is much different.
Advising young people to say, "**** it, just use weapons!" is a terrible piece of advice any way you slice it.Comment

Re: I Need To Learn How To Fight!!!
I'm pretty sure serving in the military does mean something, 55. I didn't say I can whip everyone's butt I come around because of it; I said I'm not a coward.
My mistake, as I said, was not understanding the spirit of the thread. I didn't take the time to read first page or so of this thread.
I remember my brother getting jumped at a gas station and getting beat up a little. My dad told him he should have used the pump nozzle to smack the guy back, who happened to be a lot bigger. So I'm not gonna back off on that notion. If I'm getting pounded, I'm going to hopefully get my hands on something and knock the attacker down long enough to get away. I would never use a weapon with the intent to kill, only to subdue.Comment

Re: I Need To Learn How To Fight!!!
If somebody tries to fight me in a bar they better be fast because I'm running out the door. I'm not getting fired and having my face plastered on the news.
55 sounds like he's ready for MMA because he knocks people out.SOS Madden League (PS4) | League Archives

Re: I Need To Learn How To Fight!!!
No ****ing way would I ever want to do that stuff. That's just insane, next level **** right there. Any of those guys would tear me to pieces in a heartbeat. I do heavy bag workouts three times a week, but that is strictly for cardio and stress release. That's it.
I absolutely hate fighting nowadays (I'm 33 years old) but as I said, I will not hesitate to throw the first (two!) punches/strikes as to avoid being hit myself. I'm nowhere near the toughest son of a bitch in the world, but as someone who has had their *** handed to them a couple of times (once extremely bad) I absolutely will not hesitate if I feel there is even a slight chance I could be hurt. I'm sorry but I see no problem with that.
My main piece of advice to the TC, who has zero fighting experience, was to try avoiding physical confrontations if at all possible. But as a LEO you should know that sometimes these situations are unavoidable. If provoked, someone with no fighting experience like him had better strike first in that situation as to not wear a beating like I did when I was younger.Comment

Re: I Need To Learn How To Fight!!!
If a guy comes up to you and hits you in the face with his fists and you pick up a bat, pull a knife, etc. and attack him with it, you're the one that's going to be in deep **** from a legal standpoint if you seriously hurt the other guy with it.
Now if it is some sort of robbery attempt and/or it happens in your own home, that's different. But in a random bar encounter type deal, that starts out as a fist fight and one guy decides to involve weapons, the guy who brings the weapons into the equation is the one who is going to be in trouble, whether he is the one that started the altercation or not.
Your last point is entirely untrue. You should take an interest in the law. If the fight is consensual, no, you may not escalate the force with a weapon. If it isn't, and you feel reasonably threatened, you may.Bears | Bulls | Cubs | Illinois | #Team3Some

People have been killed by fists. Nobody has to abide by your false sense of honor by using only their fists.

How do I know this? One of my friends had someone break into his dorm in college and start attacking him. He stabbed the guy with a pocket knife. Guess which person got arrested, sued, and thrown out of school?Comment

I got my *** whooped in 4th grade. Didn't even realize we were fighting until halfway through.
