    Re: Something I don't understand...

I think interstate lane merging shouldn't be nearly as hard as it is. There are times where I'll take cruise off and let off about 5mph to give on ramp traffic a chance to slide in front and they will never speed up and merge.

It's not always as easy as shifting lanes to let someone in. If I can do it I will. I do the same thing on the highway. If someone is in a median waiting to pull out I'll get over to let them on to the highway if I can.

There are some examples on the interstate where you can't get over because you will hang yourself out to dry and then have to do something dangerous to get back over so you get to an exit.

I'm not coming to a stop because some ******* wants to use the entire on ramp lane that ends, before finally getting in front of me.

Get on the gas and let's keep things moving. Some people try to hard to be aware and cautious on the interstate and it really makes them even more reckless and dangerous for everyone doing the speed limit.

I just don't think there's a black and white approach to interstate and highway driving. People just have to use some common sense and no one has to slam on brakes or cut anyone off to get where they are going.

I was going to comment on his yielding perspective this morning. Good to know people had the same thoughts I did. If you are the one merging into traffic, you yield. When you have a right turn at an intersection with a yield, it isn't the ones already on the road who yield; it is the drivers that are merging onto the road who do so. Get up to speed, and get over. It shouldn't be that difficult but too many people make it hard.

Just want to add to this in regard to the discussion about rain and snow. Driving fast or slow does not equal bad driving. When people complain about drivers in these conditions, that shouldn't be what they mean. I think the rules in terms of driving are the same in any condition. If you want to be safe and go slower, get out of the left lane (also known as the "passing lane"). If you are going to switch lanes, use a turn signal and have some sort of perspective on how close the approaching car in your new lane is and how fast they are going before switching lanes.

These rules are no different in bad weather, but many do seem to lose their **** and forget that these unwritten and many written rules are in effect. Honestly, you should drive more by the book in bad weather but people do all sorts of head scratching things. Personally, if it's raining hard enough for me to worry about sliding, I'll get in the middle or right lane and slow down... and only use the left lane to pass cars going slower than I'd like, and then I'll merge back over.

Yeah that idea just makes no sense. A SLOW driver who should be in the right lane is likely going at least 50 in a 55 and the thought is someone should be coming up on a ramp at 35 or 40, expecting that person to see them and slow down/stop to let the oncoming car get on the highway?

People are ****ty judges of speed. Depending on the on ramp, I'm basically gunning it as soon as I can, checking to see how traffic is and speeding up or slowing down to adjust.

I hate people that use the whole lane before finally, forcefully merging in. If I see an opening, and I'm far enough on the ramp, damn that solid line. Its like technically you're not supposed to cross that, but if you know what you're doing it will be fine. Just get the merge over with so other people don't have to worry about you. Not to mention cars behind merging in as well.

Basically merging is something that shouldn't be a problem 99% of the time, but as soon as you leave it up to the general population to make a decision, they fudge it.

Yea, that solid line doesn't exist in my mind on some highways. When I get on Nonconnah in Memphis, aka the Southern Autobahn, there has been many a time I've gone from on ramp to fast lane in a quarter mile or less. Gun it getting on, I'm up to 75+ by the time I'm at the highway, and then get over. I ride it to 240 after that so I get out of the maniac Memphis drivers' ways.
