I understand color blindness is more common than I'm making it out to be (and there's a good chance a lot of you here probably also inherently have this), but this is the first person whom I've met that has it this severely.

I wonder if there's a way... some techy glasses or Photoshop or what have you... that I can distort a regular image so that those colors would make her colors look like our colors, so she knows what we see. I wonder if that makes sense.
I thought that color blindness could only be passed to males and that females could only be carriers. Is that not correct?

To just more rare in females.

Color blindness is a recessive trait thats attached to the X chromosome. So if a female were to inherit it from one parent she would have another X chromosome to back it up and not be color blind. She'd have to inherit color blindness from both parents to be colorblind. Males only have one X chromosome so if they inherit it from a parent there's no other X chromosome to become dominant.

I've got a good friend that's color blind and that's the way he explained things anyway. Maybe I'm wrong.

There are a lot of genes that go into seeing color, most of which are on the X chromosome. So it's not just one trait, but otherwise it's pretty much what you described. Women having two X chromosomes makes it much harder for them to inherit it.

What's crazy about the type of colorblindness she has is that it only happens in 0.1% of the female population.

That's actually only part of the story. Because females have 2 X chromosomes and males only have 1, there needs to be a mechanism to compensate for females having 2 copies of the X-linked genes while males only have 1 copy. That'w where X chromosome inactivation comes in. In females during a very early stage of development, one X chromosome is randomly inactivated with the same X remaining inactive in all descendants of that cell. The end result is that all females are essentially what are termed mosaics for the X chromosome with some cells having inactivated the X they inherited from their mother and other cells having inactivating the one they inherited from their father. If cells that would ultimately give rise to the retinal cone cells happen to inactivate the normal X, then the X with the mutant gene will be active and they would not produce a functional opsin protein in their retinas and the individual would be color-blind.
